LUB Round 11 (Second Stage): Penarol climb to the leadership position

There are only two more rounds left in the Second Stage in LUB. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Penarol as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Penarol defeated 8th ranked Cordon in Montevideo 90-81. It was a great evening for naturalized Italian guard Jayson Granger (191-1989) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists. American guard Shaquille Johnson (191-1990, college: Marshall) helped adding 23 points and 7 rebounds. American swingman Dennis McKinney (194-1998, college: Mt.Mercy) responded with 21 points and 6 rebounds. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Aguada. Cordon lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 18 games lost. Cordon will play next round against strong Aguada trying to get back on the winning streak. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will face at home their local rival from Montevideo - Aguada. Penarol will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Hebraica. It will be extra interesting game as Hebraica is their local rival from Montevideo.
The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Aguada (23-7) in Montevideo. Hosts were defeated by Penarol (23-7) 82-77. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Aguada. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It was an exceptional evening for forward Emiliano Serres (204-1997, agency: Pro Sports) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds. JyLan Washington accounted for 22 points and 6 rebounds. Dominican center Luis Santos (203-1994, college: St.Louis) came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 14 rebounds for Aguada in the defeat. Penarol keeps a position of league leader, which they share with defeated Aguada. Penarol's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Montevideo to the arena Hebraica.

In the last two games of round 11 Aguada won against Nacional on the opponent's court 87-83. Cordon unfortunately lost to Defensor in a home game 79-89.



Defensor - Hebraica 92-76

Another exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Montevideo: Defensor (#4) and Hebraica (#5). Defensor (19-11) crushed visiting Hebraica (16-12) by 16 points 92-76. Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was guard Malik Curry (184-1999, college: WVU) who scored 29 points and 6 assists. Power forward Jamal Poplar (204-1996, college: Seward County) chipped in a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds. Poplar is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Swingman Jordan Williams (196-1992, college: N.Texas) produced 18 points (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and center Franklin Hassell (205-1988, college: ODU) added 9 points and 9 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defensor maintains fourth place with 19-11 record. Defending champion Hebraica keeps the fifth position with 12 games lost. Defensor's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Montevideo to the arena Nacional.

Nacional - Aguada 83-87

Rather expected game in Montevideo where 3rd placed Nacional (19-9) was defeated by first ranked Aguada (23-7) 87-83 on Monday. Aguada made 26-of-34 free shots (76.5 percent) during the game, while Nacional only scored seven points from the stripe. Strangely Nacional outrebounded Aguada 42-29 including 32 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was Dominican center Luis Santos (203-1994, college: St.Louis) who scored 25 points and 8 rebounds. Point guard Juan Santiso (185-1994) chipped in 13 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Argentinian forward Franco Giorgetti (203-1992) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists and American power forward Eric Anderson (204-1993, college: New Haven) added 11 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Nacional's coach Alvaro Ponce tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Aguada maintains first place with 23-7 record, which they share with Penarol. Nacional at the other side keeps the third position with nine games lost. Aguada's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Montevideo to the arena Cordon.
