Here is the weekly review of the top performing Venezuelan players, who play currently abroad.


Greivis Vasquez

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Greivis Vasquez (197-87, agency: Interperformances, college: Maryland, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the New Orleans Hornets (3-2) to beat the Philadelphia 76ers (4-2). Vasquez scored 7 points and added 7 assists in 33 minutes on the court. The New Orleans Hornets lost 62-77 on the road to the 76ers. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Vasquez has relatively good stats this year: 10.0ppg, 4.0rpg, 8.8apg, 2FGP: 34.0% and FT: 64.3% in the five games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division). Vargas was not able to help Halcones UV Xalapa (20-2) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance the league leader Halcones UV Xalapa was defeated 95-91 in Aguascalientes by the lower-ranked Panteras (#6). Vargas recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and making 11 passes. He also added and 4 steals. Vargas belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #2. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.5ppg, 3.5rpg, 7.1apg, 1.7spg, 2FGP: 52.7%, 3FGP: 35.5% and FT: 76.1%. Vargas played for the Venezuelan national team in 2010.

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international guard John Cox (196-81, college: USF, currently plays in EuroChallenge). He contributed to an easy victory against the third-ranked Pitesti (0-1) 91-75 in the EuroChallenge on Tuesday night. Cox recorded 9 points in 21 minutes. It was his first game for Paris-Levallois this season. His team is placed first in group E. Cox is a naturalized American. He is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team. Cox used to play for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

   #4. Forward Michael Carrera (196-93, currently plays in NCAA1) led S.Carolina to an overtime victory against the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee 82-75 in the NCAA in Sunday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 15 rebounds. Carrera also added 3 blocks (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). It was his first game for S.Carolina this season. His team has 0-0 conference record this season. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Carrera is a naturalized American. He is also Venezuelan national team player. Strangely Carrera has never played in Venezuela.

International swingman Jose Vargas (195-82, currently plays in Mexico) led Soles to a victory against the ninth-ranked Fuerza Regia (11-10) 101-96 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Saturday. He recorded 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. Soles de Mexicali (18-4) is placed second in the LNBP. It was his team's 17th consecutive victory in a row. It's Vargas' first season with the team. This year Vargas averages: 9.5ppg and 5.5rpg in the two games. He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.

Forward Anthony Perez (206-93, currently plays in NCAA1) contributed to an Mississippi's surprising victory against the Mississippi Valley State University crushing them 93-57 in the NCAA on Friday night. Perez recorded 9 points. The The University of Mississippi has 0-0 conference record this season. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Perez's overall stats this season are: 9.5ppg and 5.5rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Venezuelan National Team roster.

International center Gregory Echenique (206-90, currently plays in NCAA1) contributed to an easy victory against the University of North Texas crushing them 71-51 in the NCAA in Friday night's game. Echenique recorded 7 points and blocked 2 blocks in 22 minutes. The Creighton University has 0-0 conference record this season. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This year Echenique's overall stats are: 9.5ppg and 5.5rpg in the two games. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #8. Forward Juan Coronado (203-90, currently plays in NCAA1) was not able to secure a victory for the Liberty (0-0) in their game against the University of Richmond (0-0) in the NCAA. Coronado recorded 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. The Liberty was crushed 84-42 in Richmond, VA by the University of Richmond. This year Coronado's total stats are: 3.7ppg and 2.0rpg in the six games. He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.


The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Javier Roman (207-F/C-80, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) could not help one of league's weakest teams Leyma Basquet (5-1) to beat River Andorra (6-0). Roman cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Leyma Basquet was defeated 73-61 on the road by the leading River_Andorra. It was Leyma Basquet's first loss after five consecutive victories. Roman's total stats this season are: 3.7ppg and 2.0rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Spanish.

   #2. Hector Aguilar (183-PG-89, college: High School USA, currently plays in NCAA1), who plays in the RRAC was not able to help the University of Southwest (-) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Aguilar's good performance The Liberty was crushed 84-42 in Richmond, VA by the University of Richmond. was crushed 127-81 in Greeley, CO by the University of Northern Colorado. He scored 10 points and added 6 passes. The Regular Season already ended in the RRAC. Aguilar has averaged so far 3.7ppg and 2.0rpg.

TREY GILDER Experienced American Trey Gilder (206-PF-85) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for league's second-best Panteras and that's him to receive a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 18. There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in LPB. Here is the last round review presented by ESL. Top ranked Gigantes (10-6) recorded its sixth loss in Caracas on Wednesday night. Visitors were rolled over by second ranked Panteras (8-4) 87-60. Panteras looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. GREGORY ECHENIQUE International Center Gregory Echenique (206-C-90, agency: Pensack Sports) put on an amazing game in the last round for top-ranked Guaros, receiving a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 17.
