Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Venezuelans who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international shooting guard Dwight Lewis (197-87, college: USC, currently plays in Argentina). He led Gimnasia to a victory over the fifth-ranked Quilmes MP (2-4) crushing them 83-59 in the Argentinian La Liga in Saturday night's game. Lewis was MVP of the game. He recorded 29 points (!!!) and added 3 passes in 35 minutes on the court. Gimnasia-Indalo Esgr.Comodoro Rivadavia (4-3) is placed first in Group D. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. It's Lewis' first season with the team. Lewis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.6ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.3apg, 2FGP: 54.1%, 3FGP: 32.1% and FT: 66.7% in seven games he played so far. Lewis is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team. Lewis used to play for Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuelan league.

Windi Graterol

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Windi Graterol (204-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Brazil). He could not help Brasilia (8-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Graterol's very good performance Brasilia was edged 77-76 at home by the higher-ranked CR Vasco Da Gama Rio de Janeiro (#4). He was the second best scorer with 17 points. Graterol also added 8 rebounds. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Graterol has very high stats. He averages: 15.6ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.3apg, 2FGP: 54.1%, 3FGP: 32.1% and FT: 66.7%. Ex-Cocodrilos de Caracas player is in the roster of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Gregory Echenique

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Gregory Echenique (206-90, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Creighton, currently plays in Japan). Echenique was not able to help Shimane Magic (3-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the third-placed Shimane Magic (3-3) was edged 73-71 on the road by the lower-ranked (#4) Kanazawa Samuraiz in the West group. Echenique had a double-double by scoring 32 points and getting 11 rebounds in 38 minutes. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Echenique has very impressive stats this year: 20.8ppg, 16.3rpg, 2.8apg, 3.8bpg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 61.1%(33-54) and FT: 85.0% in four games. He is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Jose Materan

   #4. Swingman Jose Materan (196-96, currently plays in Argentina) contributed to a 1-point Weber Bahia's victory against the third-ranked Penarol (3-2) 72-71 in the Argentinian La Liga in Friday night's game. Materan recorded 7 points. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in Group D. Weber Bahia Blanca Basket (3-2) is placed second. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Materan's overall stats this season are: 10.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.4apg. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #5. An experienced former international small forward Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Pau-Lacq-Orthez (1-3) in their last game. Despite Smith's good performance Pau-Lacq-Orthez was edged 81-78 in Dijon by the second-ranked JDA Dijon. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and making 10 passes. Smith also added 7 rebounds in 40 minutes. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Smith has relatively good stats this year: 12.3ppg, 6.8rpg and 3.5apg in four games. He is a naturalized American. Smith used to play for the Venezuelan national team three years ago. He played also for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

   #6. Swingman Pedro Chourio (186-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Estudiantes Concordia (4-3) in their game against Regatas Corrientes (2-3) in the Argentinian La Liga. Chourio scored 5 points and added 3 assists in 23 minutes. Estudiantes Concordia was edged 69-67 in Corrientes by the lower-ranked (#4) Regatas in the Group A. It was Estudiantes Concordia's third consecutive loss in a row. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. This year Chourio's overall stats are: 7.7ppg, 3.6rpg and 1.6apg in seven games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Venezuelan National Team roster.

Alexander Morillo

   #7. Former U18 international guard Alexander Morillo (180-92, currently plays in Chile) contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Universidad Catolica (0-2) crushing them 87-67 in the Chilean Liga Nacional last Saturday. Morillo scored 15 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. It was his first game for Universidad de Concepcion this season. His team is placed first in Conferencia Centro. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Morillo used to play for the Venezuelan U18 national team nine years ago.

John Cox

   #8. Point guard John Cox (195-81, another player represented by Pensack Sports, college: USF, currently plays in France) was the main contributor in a Sluc Nancy's victory against one of league's weakest teams Quimper UJAP (0-1) 70-65 in the French ProB (second division) on Saturday night. He was the best player in that game. Cox recorded 14 points in a mere 19 minutes. It was his first game for Sluc Nancy this season. His team is placed fourth in the ProB. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Cox is a naturalized American. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team last year. Cox played also for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

Jhornan Zamora

   #9. International guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an easy victory against the 15th-ranked Real Canoe (1-2) crushing them 71-50 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Wednesday night's game. He was the top player that evening. Zamora scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Rio Ourense Termal (1-1) is placed ninth in the LEB Gold. This season Zamora has relatively solid stats: 11.5ppg, 4.0rpg and 2.0apg. He is also in the roster of the Venezuelan national team.

   #10. Point guard Harold Cazorla (175-91, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Fontedoso Carrefour (0-2) in their last game. Despite Cazorla's very good performance Fontedoso Carrefour (#11) lost 75-79 in Logrono to the higher-ranked (#6) Cocinas.com in the West group. He was the second best scorer with 16 points. Cazorla also added 6 rebounds in 33 minutes. Cazorla has reliable stats this year: 13.5ppg, 5.5rpg, 3.5apg and 1.5spg in two games. He is international player as one years ago he still played for the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #11. Former international center Luis Julio (201-80, currently plays in Chile) contributed to an easy victory against the fourth-ranked Deportivo Valdivia 96-78 in the Chilean Liga Nacional on Saturday night. Julio was the top player that evening. He recorded 27 points (!!!) and grabbed 7 rebounds. This season Julio has very high stats. He averages: 21.3ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.3spg. Julio used to play for the Venezuelan national team nine years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Luis Valera (202-88, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Azuqueca (1-1) in their last game. Despite his good performance Azuqueca (#6) lost 78-84 on their home court in Azuqueca to the second-ranked Almansa in the East group. Valera scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 22 minutes. Valera's stats this year are: 11.0ppg and 5.5rpg in two games. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2015.


The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Carlos Milano (C-85, currently plays in Chile) led Universidad de Concepcion to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Universidad Catolica (0-2) crushing them 87-67 in the Chilean Liga Nacional on Saturday night. Milano recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting the same number of rebounds. It was his first game for Universidad de Concepcion this season. His team is placed first in Conferencia Centro. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical.

   #2. Luis Merida (190-G-92, currently plays in Chile) faced previously mentioned Carlos Milano in the Chilean Liga Nacional last game. Merida. He could not help Universidad Catolica (2-6) to beat Universidad de Concepcion (2-0). Merida scored 9 points. But Universidad Catolica (#5) was badly defeated 87-67 on the road by the leading Universidad de Concepcion in the Conferencia Centro. It was Universidad Catolica's fourth consecutive loss in a row. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Merida's total stats this season are: 7.0ppg and 2.5rpg.

   #3. Luis Gonzalez (200-C/F-85, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Martorell (0-3) in their last game. Despite his good performance Martorell (#13) lost 71-75 at home to the much higher-ranked (#5) Tarragona in the Group C-A. Gonzalez was the second best scorer with 10 points in 16 minutes. So far Martorell lost all three games in the Regular Season. Gonzalez averaged so far 10.7ppg and 5.0rpg in three games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Spanish.

JHOYFER DIAZ Sportivo America de Rosario (La Liga Argentina) signed 32-year old Dominican-Venezuelan power forward Jhoyfer Diaz (200-87). He just played at Plaza in Santiago League in Dominican Republic. In four games he had 3.5ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.0bpg this season. Diaz's team made it to the El Salvador Liga Mayor Clausura Semifinals in 2015. We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level. This week's number one is an experienced international center Windi Graterol (204-86, agency: Pro Sports). He could not help Brasilia (3-12) in their last game. Despite Graterol's good performance the bottom-ranked Brasilia was crushed 97-71 at home by the much higher-ranked (#3) Paulistano.    [read more]
