Here is the weekly review of the top performing Venezuelan players, who play currently abroad.


Jose Materan
Jose Materan
   #1. This week's number one is an international swingman Jose Materan (196-96, currently plays in Argentina). He contributed to a Weber Bahia's victory against the fourth-ranked Quilmes MP (3-5) 65-52 in the Argentinian La Liga in Sunday night's game. Materan recorded 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 26 minutes on the court. Weber Bahia Blanca Basket (3-5) is placed fifth in Group D. This year Materan averages: 8.5ppg, 3.2rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 57.7%(15-26), 3FGP: 32.6% and FT: 76.5% in 10 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Gregory Echenique

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Gregory Echenique (206-90, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Creighton, currently plays in Japan). Echenique led Shimane Magic to a victory over the fifth-ranked Fukushima (4-8) 81-72 in the Japanese B2 League last Saturday. He was MVP of the game. Echenique recorded a double-double by scoring 32 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 5 blocks. Shimane Susanoo Magic (7-5) is placed third in West group. It's Echenique's first season with the team. Echenique has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 20.3ppg, 13.0rpg, 1.7apg, 2.6bpg, 2FGP: 67.8%(80-118) and FT: 81.1%. Echenique is in the roster of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Windi Graterol

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Windi Graterol (204-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Brazil). He could not help Brasilia (8-8) in their last game. Despite Graterol's good performance Brasilia was crushed 101-73 at home by the second-ranked Vivo/Franca. He scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 26 minutes. It was Brasilia's third consecutive loss in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Graterol has relatively good stats this year: 11.2ppg, 4.8rpg, 3FGP: 44.4% and FT: 69.2% in six games. Ex-Cocodrilos de Caracas player is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Donta Smith
Donta Smith
   #4. An experienced small forward Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC, currently plays in France) was the major contributor in Pau-Lacq-Orthez's victory against the closely-ranked ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (2-4) 82-79 in the French ProA in Sunday night's game. He recorded 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Elan Bearnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez (3-5) is placed 11th in the ProA. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Smith has relatively solid stats: 14.9ppg, 6.9rpg, 3.5apg and 1.1spg. He is a naturalized American. Smith used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2015. He played also for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

Alexander Morillo

   #5. Former U18 international guard Alexander Morillo (180-92, currently plays in Chile) was not able to help Universidad de Concepcion (5-3) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the second-placed Universidad de Concepcion (5-3) was defeated 86-72 on the road by the lower-ranked Espanol de Talca (#4) in the Conferencia Centro. Morillo was the second best scorer with 15 points. He also added 3 steals. Morillo has reliable stats this season: 13.3ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.6apg and 1.9spg. He used to play for the Venezuelan U18 national team nine years ago.

   #6. Swingman Francisco Centeno (203-85, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to secure a victory for Deportivo Viedma (2-1) in their last game. Despite Centeno's very good performance Deportivo Viedma (#3) was edged 79-76 on their home court in Rio Negro by the lower-ranked (#5) Petrolero in the South - South group. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Centeno also added 6 rebounds in 35 minutes. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Centeno's stats this year are: 12.3ppg and 7.7rpg in three games. He is a former international player as he played for the Venezuelan senior team six years ago.

   #7. International point guard John Cox (195-81, also represented by Pensack Sports, college: USF, currently plays in France) couldn't help Sluc Nancy (2-1) in their game against ALM Evreux (2-2) in the French ProB (second division). Cox scored 8 points and added 5 assists. Sluc Nancy was defeated 74-70 in Evreux by the lower-ranked ALM Evreux (#6). But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Cox's overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.3apg. He is a naturalized American. Cox used to play for the Venezuelan national team last year. He played also for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

Miguel Ruiz

   #8. Forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, another player represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Uruguay) couldn't help Trouville (2-4) in their game against Goes (4-2) in the Uruguayan LUB. Ruiz scored only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. It was his first game for Trouville this season. Trouville lost 69-82 in a derby game to the much higher-ranked (#3) Goes. It was Trouville's third consecutive loss in a row. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Ruiz plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.

Jhornan Zamora

   #9. International guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Ourense (3-3) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance Ourense was defeated 70-62 on their home court in Ourense by the leading Lleida_Basquet. Zamora was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 5 rebounds. This season Zamora has very high stats. He averages: 15.8ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.3apg. Zamora is also in the roster of the Venezuelan national team.

Luis Julio

   #10. Center Luis Julio (201-80, currently plays in Chile) couldn't help Aleman (3-4) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Julio's very good performance Aleman (#4) was defeated 83-78 in Valdivia by the lower-ranked Deportivo (#5) in the Conferencia Sur. He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Julio also added 7 rebounds. This season Julio has very high stats. He averages: 18.6ppg, 8.0rpg, 2.1apg and 1.1spg. Julio is a former international player as nine years ago he still played for the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #11. Former U18 international forward Jose Martinez Suarez (196-82, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Independiente (3-3) in their last game. Despite his good performance Independiente (#3) was crushed 102-77 in Resistencia by the lower-ranked (#4) Villa San Martin in the North - North group. Martinez Suarez scored 13 points in 21 minutes. This year Martinez Suarez's overall stats are: 7.3ppg and 4.2rpg in six games. He used to play for the Venezuelan U18 national team eighteen years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Luis Valera (202-88, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Azuqueca in their game against Vic in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division). Despite his very good performance last Saturday Valera scored 13 points. Valera's total stats this season are: 8.3ppg and 3.5rpg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2015.

   #13. International point guard Harold Cazorla (175-91, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Avila Autentica Carrefour in a victory against the eighth-ranked Marin 76-69 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) on Saturday night. Cazorla scored only 4 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 33 minutes. Cazorla averaged so far 11.0ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.8apg and 2.0spg in five games. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team last year.

   #14. Former international forward Juan Herrera (197-81, currently plays in Mexico) helped Lenadores win their game against the sixth-ranked Santos 99-85 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Saturday. He scored 19 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 29 minutes. This year Herrera's total stats are: 8.1ppg, 5.0rpg and 2.4apg in nine games. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2010.


The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Carlos Milano (C-85, currently plays in Chile) could not help Universidad de Concepcion (5-3) in their last game. Despite Milano's very good performance the second-placed Universidad de Concepcion (5-3) was edged 67-65 on the road by the leading Temuco in the Conferencia Centro. He was the top scorer with 17 points. Milano also added 7 rebounds in 32 minutes. It was Universidad de Concepcion's first loss after three consecutive victories. Milano has reliable stats this year: 13.7ppg and 10.1rpg in seven games he played so far.

   #2. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) managed to help Osorno Basquetbol in a victory against the third-ranked Las Animas (4-4) 78-69 in the Chilean Liga Nacional last Saturday. He recorded only 3 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in 22 minutes. Osorno Basquetbol (3-6) is placed sixth in Conferencia Sur. This year Fontena's overall stats are: 3.5ppg, 4.5rpg and 2.5apg in two games. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #3. Luis Merida (190-G-92, currently plays in Chile) was not able to help Universidad Catolica in their game against Los Leones (3-5) in the Chilean Liga Nacional. Merida recorded 9 points. But Universidad Catolica (#5) was edged 83-81 in Quilpue by the lower-ranked Los Leones (#5) in the Conferencia Centro. It was Universidad Catolica's fourth consecutive loss in a row. Merida's total stats this season are: 6.5ppg and 2.3rpg.
