We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Windi Graterol

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced international center Windi Graterol (204-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Brazil). He could not help Brasilia (3-12) in their last game. Despite Graterol's good performance the bottom-ranked Brasilia was crushed 97-71 at home by the much higher-ranked (#3) Paulistano. He was the second best scorer with 12 points. Graterol also added 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in 28 minutes on the court. It was Brasilia's fourth consecutive loss in a row. It's Graterol's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.1ppg, 6.1rpg, 2FGP: 57.6%(68-118), 3FGP: 33.3% in 15 games he played so far. Ex-Cocodrilos de Caracas player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Dwight Lewis

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Dwight Lewis (197-87, college: USC, currently plays in Argentina). Lewis led Gimnasia to a victory over the league outsider Atenas (1-6) 70-57 in the Argentinian La Liga last Tuesday. He was MVP of the game. Lewis recorded 19 points. Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia (6-2) is placed third in the La Liga. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Lewis has relatively solid stats: 12.5ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.9apg, 2FGP: 51.5%, 3FGP: 29.4% and FT: 85.0%. He is a naturalized American. Lewis is in the roster of the Venezuelan senior national team. He used to play for Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuelan league.

Jose Materan

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international swingman Jose Materan (196-96, currently plays in Argentina). Materan was not able to help Bahia Basket (1-5) in their last game. Despite his good performance Bahia Basket was edged 74-73 on their home court in Bahia Blanca by the much higher-ranked (#8) La Union. Materan scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in a mere 17 minutes. It was Bahia Basket's fourth consecutive loss in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Materan's overall stats are: 7.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 3FGP: 35.7% in four games. He is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Pedro Chourio

   #4. Swingman Pedro Chourio (186-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina) contributed to a Estudiantes Concordia's victory against the closely-ranked Hispano Americano de Rio Gallegos (3-5) 90-78 in the Argentinian La Liga in Tuesday night's game. Chourio recorded 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Estudiantes Concordia (2-7) is placed 16th in the La Liga. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This season Chourio averages: 6.8ppg and 4.6rpg. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #5. Former international small forward Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC, currently plays in France) helped Pau-Lacq-Orthez win their game against one of league's weakest teams Provence Basket (4-12) 84-77 in the French ProA last Saturday. Smith recorded 8 points and added 4 passes in 32 minutes. Elan Bearnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez (11-5) is placed second in the ProA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Smith has reliable stats this year: 13.4ppg, 6.6rpg, 4.4apg and 1.2spg in 16 games. He is a naturalized American. Smith used to play for the Venezuelan national team four years ago. He played also for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

   #6. Forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, another player represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Uruguay) was not able to secure a victory for Trouville (9-9) in their game against Nacional (14-5) in the Uruguayan LUB. Ruiz scored 6 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Trouville was defeated 76-67 in a derby game by the leading Nacional. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Ruiz's total stats this season are: 4.8ppg, 10.3rpg, 1.3apg and 2.2spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Venezuelan National Team roster.

   #7. International center Gregory Echenique (206-90, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Creighton, currently plays in Japan) helped Shimane Magic win their game against the fourth-ranked Orange Vikings (12-19) crushing them 90-64 in the Japanese B2 League in Monday night's game. Echenique had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 10 rebounds in 29 minutes. Shimane Susanoo Magic (21-10) is placed third in West group. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Echenique has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 19.4ppg, 14.4rpg, 2.4apg and 1.6bpg in 29 games. Echenique is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #8. Point guard John Cox (195-81, another player represented by Pensack Sports, college: USF, currently plays in France) helped Sluc Nancy win their game against the closely-ranked Entente Orleans 45 (10-4) 76-71 in the French ProB (second division) last Saturday. He recorded 13 points and blocked 2 blocks. Sluc Nancy Basket Pro (9-5) is placed fifth in the ProB. Cox averaged so far 11.2ppg, 1.7rpg and 2.5apg. He is a naturalized American. Cox used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2017. He played also for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

   #9. International guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Spain) was the major contributor in Ourense's victory against the closely-ranked Melilla Baloncesto (10-7) 68-60 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Saturday night. Zamora scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 31 minutes. Rio Ourense Termal (10-7) is placed seventh in the LEB Gold. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Zamora has very impressive stats this year: 16.2ppg, 3.3rpg, 1.9apg and 1.3spg in 15 games. He is also in the roster of the Venezuelan national team.

Point guard Harold Cazorla (175-91, currently plays in Spain) helped Fontedoso Carrefour win their game against the fifth-ranked Zamorano (10-7) 66-63 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) last Sunday. He scored 9 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 26 minutes. Avila Autentica Carrefour (8-9) is placed ninth in West group. Cazorla's stats this year are: 10.4ppg, 4.5rpg, 4.8apg and 2.7spg in 16 games. He is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #11. Former international center Luis Julio (201-80, currently plays in Chile) helped Aleman win their game against the leader Temuco 93-79 in the Chilean Liga Nacional on Sunday night. Julio recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 5 assists. Julio averaged so far 14.0ppg, 10.5rpg and 2.5apg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team ten years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Luis Valera (202-88, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) helped Azuqueca win their game against the 12th-ranked Vic 95-87 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) last Saturday. Valera scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Valera's total stats this season are: 7.6ppg and 2.9rpg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2015.

   #13. Former international forward Juan Herrera (197-81, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help Lenadores in their game against Correcaminos in the Mexican LNBP (second division). He recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. His team was defeated 106-99. Herrera's total stats this season are: 8.4ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.7apg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team nine years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Osbel Caraballo (196-F-98, currently plays in NCAA2) led St. Thomas Aquinas College to a victory against the New York Institute of Technology 93-79 in the NCAA2 in Wednesday night's game. Caraballo recorded 16 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. The St. Thomas Aquinas College has 3-0 record this season. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. Caraballo averaged so far 14.1ppg and 7.1rpg.

   #2. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile). Fontena could not help Osorno Basquetbol (8-14) to beat Puente Alto (11-10). He recorded 7 points in 16 minutes. The sixth-placed Osorno Basquetbol (8-14) lost 73-83 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Puente Alto in the Conferencia Sur. It was Osorno Basquetbol's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Fontena's total stats are: 7.7ppg, 5.4rpg and 2.1apg in 10 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #3. Luis Merida (190-G-92, currently plays in Chile) was not able to help Universidad Catolica in their game against CD Castro (10-11) in the Chilean Liga Nacional. Merida cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points in 6 minutes on the court. The fifth-placed Universidad Catolica (2-6) lost 87-93 in Castro to the lower-ranked (#5) CD Castro in the Conferencia Centro. It was Universidad Catolica's fourth consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Merida's total stats are: 6.2ppg and 2.2rpg in 20 games.
