Venezuelans Abroad - Gregory Echenique (Fukushima) continues to shine in Japan's B2- October 15, 2023

Venezuelan C Gregory Echenique (208-C-1990, college: Creighton, agency: Pensack Sports), of the Fukushima Firebonds in Japan's B2 League, continues to figure among the top 5 players in this league when it comes to points (4th), rebounds (2nd) and blocks (5th), after the first four rounds of the 2023-2024 season. His team is playing for a 2-2 record so far, after splitting a two game series against Kumamoto Volters (2-2). In the first game (October 14th), Kumamoto prevailed, 97-79, thanks to 26 points of Terrance Woodbury (203-G-1987, college: Georgia) and 22 by Aaron White (206-F-1992, college: Iowa). In this game, Echenique finished up with a double double of 23 points and 17 rebounds, adding an assist in all 40 minutes of play, as he didn't get any breathers this time. Fukushima took revenge in the next game (October 15th), winning 83-77 thanks to Echenique's 16 points, 19 rebounds and 2 blocks, also adding an assist in 39 minutes of play. Terrance King (198-F, college: ESU, agency: Interperformances) added 20 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side. Echenique is now averaging 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 4 games. It's his sixth straight season playing in Japan in between B1 and B2 teams and he's just starting his second season with Fukushima, after spending the previous three years playing for Hiroshima Dragonflies in B2 and B1. His first experience in Japan was back in the 2018-2019 B2 season with Shimane Susanoo Magic. His next series will take place at home against Aomori Watts (3-1) between October 21st-22nd.
