Gladiadores - Guaiqueries 85-76

Gladiatores claimed 2024 SPB title. They overcame Guaiqueries in Game 4 of the championship series to conquer the trophy. Gladiadores dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Guaiqueries' 32. Gladiadores looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 5 passes made by Guaiqueries' players. International point guard Gregory Vargas (181-1986) fired a double-double by scoring 11 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists for the winners. Puerto Rican point guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 19 points and 4 assists. The former international guard Pedro Chourio (196-1990) produced 19 points and 9 rebounds and American Donald Sims (190-1987, college: App State, agency: Pensack Sports) added 16 points (made all of his seven free throws) respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.

Luis Montero, 31-year old Dominican small forward from the Minas Belo Horizonte, was honored as the Player of the Year at the Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto. He graduated from the South Plains nine years ago. Montero received multiple other awards, earned the Forward of the Year and was voted to the First Team. He was previously selected to the Second Team back in 2022 and named to Honorable Mention last year selection. Montero was the Player of the Week honoree twice during the 24 campaign. He averaged almost 13 points and 8 rebounds per game in the league. Montero recorded double-doubles in 6 games at the event. His 19 points against the Panteras were the most he scored in the 2024 season. He played in the final of the Colombian LPB Clausura in 2023.
The standout point guard Gregory Vargas picked up the Guard of the Year of the championship-winning Gladiadores de Anzoategui. He was also chosen to the First Team. With Vargas' outstanding performance, the Gladiadores de Anzoategui achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 22 to 2 in the regular season and 4 to 0 in the Round of 16. Vargas' excellent performance assisted his team in beating the Guaiqueries 4 to 0 in the final series. He previously earned Honorable Mention last year. Vargas registered over 10 points per game that season in the league. He led the SPB in assists per game with almost 8. Vargas has totalled 3 games of 20 or more points and had double-doubles in 8 games on the year. His 22 points against the Heroes were the most he scored in the 2024 season.
Michael Watkins, American forward from the Piratas de la Guaira, was named the Center of the Year of Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto. He is the Penn State alumni from 2020. Watkins collected multiple other honors, was voted the Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the First Team. He recorded almost 14 points per game over the season in the league. Watkins received Player of the Week award in the league. He led the SPB in rebounds per game with almost 11. Watkins has totalled 6 games of 20 or more points and logged double-doubles in 13 games on the year. His 28 points against the Centauros were the most he scored in the 2024 season. Watkins' team won the Dominican Republic LNB Regular Season in 2021.
Romeao Ferguson, 27-year old American guard from the Diablos de Miranda, earned a spot in the First Team at the Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto. He is ex Lipscomb from 2021. Ferguson averaged over 6 rebounds per game in the league. He led the SPB in points per game with over 22. Ferguson has totalled 12 games of 20 or more points on the year and registered 30 or more points in 2 games. His 38 points against the Gaiteros were the most he scored in the 2024 season. The best players in the league are US college alumni. Just on the list of the top 10 best scorers we have all of them had college careers. Among many awards he was selected to the All-ConferenceCarolinas Defensive Player of the Year as well as the All-Southeast District Second Team back in 2020. He was also selected to the All-ConferenceCarolinas First Team between 2019 and 2020. Ferguson was also selected to the ConferenceCarolinas All-Tournament Team between 2019 and 2020.
The standout forward Michael Carrera was voted to the First Team of the championship-winning Gladiadores de Anzoategui. He is alumni of the University of South Carolina from 2016. Carrera's excellent performance assisted his team in beating the Guaiqueries 4 to 0 in the final series. He notched over 15 points and almost 8 rebounds per game that season in the league. Carrera has totalled 11 games of 20 or more points and recorded double-doubles in 12 games on the year. His 25 points against the Spartans were the most he scored in the 2024 season. Among many awards he was selected to the Eurobasket All-Spanish LEB Gold Import Player of the Year in 2022. He was also selected to the Eurobasket All-Spanish LEB Gold First Team in 2022. Carrera was selected to the Eurobasket Spanish LEB Gold All-Imports Team in 2022. He was also selected to the Latinbasket All-Venezuelan SLB Second Team back in 2020. Carrera was also best scorer in the league last season while he had played for the Gran Canaria when he scored over 20 points per game.
