Regular Season Round 20: Santiagueno - Santa Ana 114-60
Date: April 22, 2023
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 8th ranked Santa Ana (5-10) was smashed by ninth ranked Santiagueno (4-10) in Usultan 114-60 on Saturday. Santiagueno dominated down low during the game scoring 94 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Ana's 40. They outrebounded Santa Ana 60-24 including a 47-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Santiagueno looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Santa Ana's players. The winners were led by American-Colombian center Freddy Asprilla (206-1988, college: Canisius) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 21 points, 27 rebounds and 5 assists and American guard EJ Blackwell (193, college: Lourdes) supported him with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Four Santiagueno players scored in double figures. Even 21 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists by American guard Anthony Strickland (196-1993, college: EMU) did not help to save the game for Santa Ana. Erick Rojas (183-1996) added 15 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Santiagueno maintains ninth position with 4-10 record. Santa Ana lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with ten games lost. Santiagueno will meet higher ranked Quezaltepeque (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Santa Ana will have a break next round.
