Regular Season Round 8: Mazatlan - Culiacan 94-68
Date: April 5, 2023
There was a surprise result when sixth ranked Venados (7-9) rolled over second-ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (10-6) in Mazatlan 94-68 on Wednesday. Venados dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Caballeros de Culiacan's 36. They outrebounded Caballeros de Culiacan 41-28 including 16 on the offensive glass. Venados looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 5 passes made by Caballeros de Culiacan's players. Americans were the main players on the court. The winners were led by center Vincent Boumann (206-1996, college: WOU) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 15 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists and point guard Jay-R Strowbridge (183-1988, college: Oregon, agency: Interperformances) supported him with 21 points and 4 assists. Strowbridge is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Even 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) by Barry Ogalue (196-1994, college: LBSU, agency: ROCKIN SPORTS) did not help to save the game for Caballeros de Culiacan. Guard DAngelo Hunter (201-1996, college: Nicholls St., agency: MSG) added 14 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Five Venados and four Caballeros de Culiacan players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Venados moved-up to fourth place. Loser Caballeros de Culiacan keeps the second position with six games lost. Venados will again meet at home league's second-placed Caballeros de Culiacan in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Caballeros de Culiacan will have a break next round.
