Regular Season Round 8: Mayaguez - Arecibo 96-90

There was a small surprise when sixth ranked Indios (3-7) beat one of their biggest challengers Capitanes (5-4) in Mayaguez 96-90 on Saturday. Indios made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Strangely Capitanes outrebounded Indios 43-29 including a 16-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by American power forward Terrence Jones (206-1992, college: Kentucky) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import point guard Dwight Buycks (191-1989, college: Marquette) supported him with 21 points. Even a double-double of 15 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists by Nigerian-American power forward Chinemelu Elonu (206-1987, college: Texas A&M) did not help to save the game for Capitanes. Dominican Victor Liz (193-1986) added 29 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Four Indios and five Capitanes players scored in double figures. Indios have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with San German. Defending champion Capitanes keep the third position with four games lost. Indios will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Capitanes will play against Mets in Guaynabo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
