Regular Season Round 32: Guaiqueries - Cangrejeros 89-81

There was no surprise when 5th ranked Cangrejeros (4-17) lost to third ranked Guaiqueries (13-5) in Porlamar 81-89 on Thursday. Guaiqueries made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game. Guaiqueries outrebounded Cangrejeros 53-31 including a 37-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. American players dominated the game. The winners were led by guard Melvin Johnson (193-1993, college: VCU) who scored that evening 28 points and 5 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) and forward Anthony Young (200-1989, college: KWC) supported him with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Even 13 points and 6 rebounds by Menas Stephens (198-1992, college: SW Baptist) did not help to save the game for Cangrejeros. Forward Eric Frederick (203-1989, college: TxWes) added 14 points for the guests. Four Guaiqueries and five Cangrejeros players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Guaiqueries keep a position of league leader, which they share with Cocodrilos. Loser Cangrejeros keep the fifth place with 17 games lost. Guaiqueries will meet Marinos (#4) in the next round. Cangrejeros will play against Supersonicos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
