LigaA: Penarol wins the title after 15 years! - May 26, 2010

Penarol - Atenas 80-60

Penarol is the new champion! They managed to beat Atenas last night 80-60 and to win the Finals with almost perfect 4-1. This is the first championship title for Penarol since 1994. Last season it was Atenas. Leonardo Gutierrez (200-F-78) stepped up for Penarol in this game with 23 points. Kyle Lamonte (191-G-84, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: William Carey) added 18 points and 9 rebounds. Facundo Campazzo (180-G-91) was the last one with double-digits in scoring for Penarol with 12 pts (5 rebs). On the other side, Diego Lo Grippo (198-F-78) exploded with 38 points and 6 rebounds. However, he was the only Atenas' player in a game mood yesterday. Except of the first quarter, Penarol was a way better team in this meeting. Opening ten minutes finished with 24-24 tie, but all after that belonged to the home squad. Leonardo Gutierrez and his teammates made 20-13 in the second and 15-10 in third period. At that point of game it was already clear that Atenas won't have a chance. Penarol continued in the same rhythm and for the last ten minutes increased its lead to 20. The final score was 80-60 and Penarol has reason for a joy after 15 years. As a reminder, Penarol was the regular season champion this season. In the Playoff Quarterfinals, Penarol eliminated Lanus with 3-0. At the next stage they blasted Boca Juniors also with perfect score.

Liga A: penarol champion! - May 26, 2010

Finally penarol, as it was expected won 80-60 the fifth game of the finals and became the new champion of Liga A. 8000 people enjoyed the title in the stadium and then in the streets of Mar del Plata for hours. Leonardo Gutierrez (200-F-78) was selected MVP of the serie, especially for his great game in the fifth one, but all the players had a great serie, outstanding Marcos Mata and Martin Leiva. It was a deserved award for a team that was clearly the best during the whole season. They had lost just one game at home in all the season, and in playoffs theyjust lost one game ( the third against atenas). Sergio Hernandez did a great job. Pablo rodriguez, the historic player of penarol, guided the team. Leonardo Gutierrez (200-F-78) showe one more time why he is one of the most important players in the history of liga A. Kyle Lamonte was the outstanding foreigner that all team need to be champion. And of course the rest of the players were as good as them. Marcos Mata proved that he is one of the small forwards with more future in the argentinian basketball, and Sebastian Vega follows his steps. Leiva was unstopppable in low post. Campazzo was the revelation. Alejandro Diez and Alejandro Reinick helped from the bench. And Raymundo Legaria did not play too many minutes but he added another championship to his career.
