LDD Round 16: Instituto beat San Martin by one after a very close game

The most exciting game of round 16 in the LDD took place in Corrientes. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of much higher ranked San Martin (13-4) to fifth ranked Instituto (13-5) 76-75 on Thursday evening. Strangely San Martin outrebounded Instituto 46-31 including a 14-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. 25 personal fouls committed by San Martin helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Juan Frontera (178-2) who helped to win the game recording 19 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. point guard Bruno Abratte (174-4) contributed with 20 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winners. Franco Mendez (188-2) replied with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 14 rebounds for San Martin. Instituto have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Obera. San Martin at the other side keeps the second position with four games lost. Instituto is looking forward to face La Union (#14) in Formosa in the next round which should be an easy win for them. San Martin's supporters also look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Corrientes Regatas.
Important game to mention about took place in Corrientes. Fifth ranked Instituto (13-5) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging 6th ranked Regatas (11-6) 84-81 on Tuesday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Juan Frontera (178-2) who helped to win the game recording 17 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists and Jeronimo Dominguez who added 14 points and 9 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) during the contest. At the losing side guard Juan Scacchi (186-1) responded with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Instituto have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Obera. Regatas at the other side keeps the sixth position with six games lost. Instituto will play against La Union (#14) in Formosa in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Regatas' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Corrientes to the arena San Martin.
Eighteenth-ranked Gimnasia CR (3-15) used its home court advantage to challenge third ranked Obera (13-5) in Comodoro Rivadavia on Tuesday. The visitors from Obera managed to secure only one-point victory 78-77. However their fans expected much easier game. The winners were led by Taiel Gomez who scored that evening 19 points and 6 rebounds. Even 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists (made all of his seven free throws) by Franco Ferraria did not help to save the game for Gimnasia CR. Obera have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 13-5 record behind leader Comunicaciones, which they share with Instituto. Gimnasia CR lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the nineteenth place with 15 games lost. Obera will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gimnasia CR will play against Boca Jrs (#5) in Buenos Aires and hope to secure a win.

Other games in round 16 were not that significant. Atenas beat Penarol on the road 82-78. Riachuelo LR destroyed Ferro on its own court 114-74. Obras managed to outperform Olimpico in Buenos Aires 76-70. Boca Jrs. rolled over Platense at home 89-65. Argentino was defeated by Union on the opponent's court 67-65. Quimsa smashed H.Americano in a home game 104-70.
The most impressive performance of 16th round was 29 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists by Francisco Corradi of Quimsa.



Penarol - Atenas 78-82

No shocking result in a game when ninth ranked Atenas (9-7) beat 16th ranked Penarol (6-11) in Mar del Plata 82-78 on Monday. Atenas forced 20 Penarol turnovers. The winners were led by Ignacio Segura (195-0) who scored that evening 27 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and point guard Maximo Araujo (183-3) supported him with 23 points. Even a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds by center Nicolas Franco (204-99) did not help to save the game for Penarol. Swingman Lucas Gorosterrazu (197-98, agency: BIG) added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for lost side. Four Penarol players scored in double figures. Despite that victory Atenas went down to tenth position due to points difference. Loser Penarol keeps the sixteenth place with 11 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Rather expected game when 13th ranked Ferro (7-11) was smashed by tenth ranked Riachuelo LR (10-7) in La Rioja 114-74 on Monday. Riachuelo LR outrebounded Ferro 56-35 including a 42-31 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Ferro's players. The winners were led by forward Lucas Gallardo (199-1) who scored that evening 26 points and 5 rebounds and Colombian forward Yustin Llerena (195-2) supported him with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Riachuelo LR's coach felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even a double-double of 35 points (!!!), 11 rebounds and 6 assists by point guard Joaquin Lo Brutto (184-3) did not help to save the game for Ferro. Martin Gonzalez (-7) added 10 points and 7 rebounds for lost side. Five Riachuelo LR and four Ferro players scored in double figures. Riachuelo LR moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Obras. Ferro lost third consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth position with 11 games lost. Riachuelo LR will meet at home bottom-ranked H.Americano (#20) in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Ferro will play against the league's leader Comunicaciones (#1) having rather not much hope for a victory.

The winners were led by Venezuelan power forward Fernando Fuenmayor (201-0) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds and Alejo Digon (195-99) supported him with 13 points. Even 19 points and 4 assists by forward Mateo Codigoni (191-0) did not help to save the game for Olimpico. Ecuadorian forward Aaron Capurro (201-0) added 15 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Olimpico's coach rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Obras maintains eighth position with 10-7 record, which they share with Riachuelo LR. Loser Olimpico keeps the seventeenth place with 13 games lost. Obras will meet at home league's leader Comunicaciones in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
