The game between third ranked Riachuelo (20-11) and sixth ranked Obras (19-12) was the most important one in the last round on Friday night. Riachuelo was crushed by Obras in La Rioja 90-63. Obras looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Riachuelo helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American forward Chris Clarke (196-1996, college: Texas Tech, agency: Interperformances) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). The former international Leonel Schattmann (193-1987) chipped in 18 points. point guard Juan Corbalan (185-1998) produced 18 points for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Obras moved-up to fifth place. Riachuelo at the other side keeps the third position with 11 games lost. Obras are looking forward to face Gimnasia (#7) in Comodoro Rivadavia in the next round. It was quite big embarassment for the home team. Lautaro Fraga contributed with 16 points and 8 assists for the winners. Swingman Jose Montero (193-1995) answered with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for Atenas. Zarate maintains nineteenth place with 9-22 record. Newly promoted Atenas keeps the eleventh position with 15 games lost. Zarate will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Atenas will play at home against San Martin (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Olivia, where higher ranked San Martin (17-17) lost to sixteenth ranked Independ.O. (13-20) in a road game 80-93 on Saturday. It was a great evening for Rolando Vallejos who led his team to a victory scoring 15 points and 6 rebounds. Independ.O.'s coach Martin Gonzalez used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sebastian Acevedo responded with 27 points. Independ.O. maintains sixteenth place with 13-20 record. Loser San Martin keeps the ninth position with 17 games lost. Independ.O. will meet at home La Union (#18) in the next round. San Martin will play against Instituto (#6) in Cordoba and hope to secure a win.
