La Liga Round 35 (Regular Season): Riachuelo is upset by Obras

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The game between third ranked Riachuelo (20-11) and sixth ranked Obras (19-12) was the most important one in the last round on Friday night. Riachuelo was crushed by Obras in La Rioja 90-63. Obras looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Riachuelo helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American forward Chris Clarke (196-1996, college: Texas Tech, agency: Interperformances) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). The former international Leonel Schattmann (193-1987) chipped in 18 points. point guard Juan Corbalan (185-1998) produced 18 points for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Obras moved-up to fifth place. Riachuelo at the other side keeps the third position with 11 games lost. Obras are looking forward to face Gimnasia (#7) in Comodoro Rivadavia in the next round. Riachuelo will have a break next round.

Lautaro Fraga contributed with 16 points and 8 assists for the winners. Swingman Jose Montero (193-1995) answered with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for Atenas. Zarate maintains nineteenth place with 9-22 record. Newly promoted Atenas keeps the eleventh position with 15 games lost. Zarate will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Atenas will play at home against San Martin (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Olivia, where higher ranked San Martin (17-17) lost to sixteenth ranked Independ.O. (13-20) in a road game 80-93 on Saturday. It was a great evening for Rolando Vallejos who led his team to a victory scoring 15 points and 6 rebounds. Independ.O.'s coach Martin Gonzalez used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sebastian Acevedo responded with 27 points. Independ.O. maintains sixteenth place with 13-20 record. Loser San Martin keeps the ninth position with 17 games lost. Independ.O. will meet at home La Union (#18) in the next round. San Martin will play against Instituto (#6) in Cordoba and hope to secure a win.

Atenas - Zarate 94-96

Important game to mention about took place in Cordoba. Nineteenth ranked Zarate (9-22) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging higher ranked Atenas (16-15) 96-94 on Thursday evening. It was a great evening for the former international center Ivan Basualdo (203-1990) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Nicolas Stenta (200-2004) helped adding 18 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Five San Lorenzo players scored in double figures. Guard Mateo Perez (189-2002, agency: BIG) responded with 18 points and 6 rebounds and Manuel Rodriguez (203-2002) scored 9 points and 15 rebounds. San Lorenzo maintains fifteenth place with 14-17 record. Loser La Union keeps the eighteenth position with 20 games lost. San Lorenzo will meet at home Platense (#17) in the next round. La Union will play against Independ.O. in Olivia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

No shocking result in a game in Buenos Aires where fourteenth ranked Ferro (15-16) smashed bottom-ranked Argentino (5-25) 90-67 on Friday. Ferro outrebounded Argentino 39-28 including 30 on the defensive glass. It was a great evening for forward Mariano Fierro (200-1986) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Paraguayan center Leonel Bettiga (208) helped adding 18 points and 5 rebounds. Four Ferro players scored in double figures. Mexican swingman Manuel Hernandez (193-1991) responded with 19 points and 6 rebounds and Ignacio Bednarek (206-2001) scored 15 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ferro have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Penarol and Olimpico. Argentino lost fourth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 25 lost games. Ferro will meet at home league's second-placed Quimsa in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Argentino will play against the league's second-placed Quimsa (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

Very expected game in Florida where 17th ranked Platense (11-22) was defeated by seventh ranked Gimnasia (18-12) 94-88 on Saturday. Gimnasia made 23-of-29 free shots (79.3 percent) during the game. It was a great evening for Cuban swingman Marcos Chacon (194-2003) who led his team to a victory scoring 28 points (perfect behind the arc making all six shots !!!). American forward Kenneth Horton (201-1989, college: CCSU, agency: Octagon Europe) helped adding 17 points and 6 rebounds. Gimnasia's coach Martin Villagran used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Point guard Facundo Vazquez (185-1998) responded with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists and the former international Eric Flor (190-1993) scored 18 points and 4 assists. Four Gimnasia and five Platense players scored in double figures. Gimnasia have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain seventh place with 18-12 record. Platense lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the seventeenth position with 22 games lost. Gimnasia will meet league's leader Boca in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Platense will play against San Lorenzo (#15) in Almagro and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
