La Liga Round 31 (Regular Season): Obras are defeated by Platense

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The game between second ranked Obras (14-8) and fifteenth ranked Platense (9-12) was the most important one in the last round on Sunday night. Obras was defeated by Platense in Florida 87-74. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Obras. Platense looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a great evening for swingman Julian Morales (195-1995) who led his team to a victory scoring 11 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Cesar Jara helped adding 14 points and 5 assists (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Platense's coach Martin Yanguela used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side American guard Ty Sabin (190-1994, college: Ripon) responded with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Platense moved-up to fourteenth place. Obras at the other side keeps the second position with eight games lost. Platense will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Obras' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Buenos Aires Ferro.
Fourteenth-ranked Boca Juniors (8-12) gave a tough game to seventh ranked Regatas (13-7) in Corrientes. Regatas managed to secure only three-point victory 58-55. However their fans expected much easier game. It was an exceptional evening for the former international power forward Tayavek Gallizzi (206-1993) who led the winners and scored 16 points and 5 rebounds. Claudio Ramirez accounted for 10 points. Regatas' coach Juan Manuel Varas allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international Sebastian Vega (200-1988) came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds for Boca Juniors in the defeat. Regatas moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Obera. Boca Juniors lost sixth consecutive game. Defending champion dropped to the fifteenth position with 12 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
An interesting game took place in Chivilcoy where higher ranked Olimpico (10-13) was upset on the court of eighteenth ranked Racing Ch. (7-16) 82-73 on Friday. Joaquin Valinotti fired 21 points and 4 assists for the winners. Jose Montero produced 12 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Newly promoted Racing Ch. maintains eighteenth place with 7-16 record. Loser Olimpico keeps the thirteenth position with 13 games lost. Racing Ch. will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Olimpico will play against Penarol (#10) and hope to secure a win.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 31: Independ.O. won against San Lorenzo on the opponent's court 80-69. Union unfortunately lost to Obera in a home game 83-91. San Martin recorded a loss to Instituto on the road 75-80. Bottom-ranked Argentino was defeated by Olimpico on its own court 75-84.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 13 points and 5 assists by Juan Guerrero of Platense.



San Lorenzo - Independ.O. 69-80

Very expected game in Almagro where 16th ranked San Lorenzo (7-13) was defeated by third ranked Independ.O. (14-6) 80-69 on Thursday. Independ.O. outrebounded San Lorenzo 44-33 including 35 on the defensive glass. Forward Enzo Filippetti (201-2001) fired 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. The former international center Agustin Caffaro (211-1995) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Facundo Rutenberg (195-2001) produced 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and Leandro Cerminato (201-1998) added 18 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Independ.O. keeps a position of league leader. Loser San Lorenzo keeps the sixteenth place with 13 games lost. Independ.O. will meet at home San Martin (#12) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. San Lorenzo will play against Atenas (#17) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Guard Nicolas Copello (193-1992) fired 22 points for the winners.
