Cybots Dethrone Giants For NPBA Title, Bain Named Series MVP - Apr 24, 2009
There will be a new men's National Basketball Champion crowned this weekend in Bimini after the Electro Telecom Cybots climbed all the way to the top of the number one men's basketball league in the country by dethroning the Commonwealth Bank Giants, the defending champions of the New Providence Basketball Association and the National Champions.
Last Wednesday night at the Kendal Isaacs Gym the Cybots took a two games to one lead in the shortened best-of-five series that was originally scheduled for seven. The Cybots won game one then droped the second game allowing the Giants to tie the series at one game each before Wednesdays pivotal 96-94 victory to take a one game edge in the series.
Friday night, the Cybots could smell blood and were poised to end the series and avoid a decisive game five. They won the game 102-92 and with it the title.
Forward/guard Brian Bain (190-G) led the Cybots throughout the post season and finished with two big games including 25 points in game three and a monster 43 points in the closeout game on Friday to capture the series MVP award.
'We worked hard all year, we couldn't come up short today. Coach has worked hard and has been looking forward to this for a long time and this first one is really for him,' said Bain.
Power Forward Nelson Joseph (188-G-78, college: Anderson) was also big in the series averaging approximately 20 points and 10 rebounds. At the begining of the season Watson felt as though Josephs presence in the post would be the key to capturing the title.
The Cybots received good play from two critical areas on their team namely their guards led by team captain Delvone Duncombe, and solid play from the bench led by sharp shoot Cecil Mackey.
'Work at Cabbage Beach, Goodman's Bay , the 66-steps and the weight room, it all paid off tonight,' said Joseph.
In Friday's loss guard, Garvin Lightbourne, former College of The Bahamas star player who joined the Giants this season led his side with 22 points. For most of the post season forward Mark Hanna, guard Michael Bain and centre Jeremy Hutchinson carried the load, but Bain was slowed by injury and the Cybots were able to keep Hutchinson under control for much of the series.
At the beginning of the season Cybots coach Wade Watson said publically that he was confident he had assembled a team that would be able to go all the way.
Watson spent the last eight years building his program, including a crushing loss to the Giants in the 2008 championship series.
'Nine years of hard work and this is our first ever championship title. These guys worked extremely hard; 400 plus hours including season games, practices, community work, and they deserve it,' said Watson just before hoisting the championship trophy.
The Cybots will now look forward to winning the National Basketball Championship when they compete in The Bahamas Basketball Federations round robin championships April 24-26 at the new Gateway Stadium in Bimini.
Perry Thompson is the head coach for the Giants.
