There was a surprise result when sixteenth ranked La Union (13-21) won against higher ranked Ferro (20-14) in Formosa 82-73 on Saturday. La Union made 17-of-17 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. La Union outrebounded Ferro 41-26 including a 31-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Naturalized Spanish guard Jonathan Maldonado (188-1990) notched 23 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the effort and American forward Zac Cuthbertson (201-1996, college: Coastal) supported him with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Four La Union players scored in double figures. Even 20 points and 7 rebounds by Uruguayan center Theo Metzger (200-1999) did not help to save the game for Ferro. Power forward Marco Luchi (198-1992) added 9 points and 6 rebounds for lost side. Ferro's coach Federico Fernandez tested twelve players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. La Union moved-up to fifteenth place. Loser Ferro keeps the fifth position with 14 games lost. They share it with San Martin. La Union will meet higher ranked Boca (#7) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Ferro will play against Penarol having rather not much hope for a victory.
