Regular Season Round 25: Piratas - Gaiteros 111-77

There was no surprise in La Guaira where 5th ranked Gaiteros (5-12) were crushed by third ranked Piratas (9-8) 111-77 on Friday. Piratas made 27-of-31 free shots (87.1 percent) during the game. Piratas outrebounded Gaiteros 40-26 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American-Hungarian forward Damian Hollis (203-1988, college: GWU) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners and American Tamyrik Fields (198-1996, college: Augusta, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 19 points and 10 rebounds. At the losing side American guard Elyjah Clark (190-1998, college: MSSU) responded with 15 points and 6 assists and Alcides Martinez (198) scored 19 points. Four Piratas and five Gaiteros players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Piratas. Newly promoted Piratas maintains third place with 9-8 record having just one point less than leader Centauros. Gaiteros lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the fifth position with 12 games lost. Piratas will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gaiteros will play against the league's second-placed Broncos (#2) in Caracas and hope to secure a win.
