There was a small surprise when ninth ranked Malvin (7-7) beat 6th ranked Nacional (7-7) in Montevideo 79-73 on Wednesday. Malvin forced 20 Nacional turnovers. It was an exceptional evening for naturalized German Kiril Wachsmann (203-1984, college: Iona) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 18 rebounds. U.S. Virgin Islands-Puerto Rican forward Ivan Aska (201-1990, college: Murray St., agency: 011 Sports) accounted for 17 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side. Point guard Alejandro Acosta (189-1989) came up with 19 points and 5 rebounds and American center Gary McGhee (210-1988, college: Pittsburgh, agency: Inception Sports) added 8 points and 17 rebounds respectively for Nacional in the defeat. Five Malvin and four Nacional players scored in double figures. Malvin moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Nacional. Malvin will meet bottom-ranked Urupan (#13) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Nacional's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Montevideo Penarol.
