Regular Season Round 4: Catolica - Las Animas 96-94

There was a surprise result when fifteenth ranked Catolica (1-3) edged higher ranked Las Animas (1-3) in Santiago 96-94 on Sunday. Catolica forced 19 Las Animas turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The winners were led by American point guard Manny Payton (183-1997, college: FSU) who scored that evening 27 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Pablo Allegrini (-2000) supported him with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Payton is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Even a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds by Argentinian power forward Cristian Amicucci (200-1985) did not help to save the game for Las Animas. Spanish Alejandro Vergara (196-1995) added 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Catolica left bottom position moving up to twelfth place, which they share with Las Animas and Puerto Montt. It was Las Animas' third loss in a row. Catolica will meet Puerto Montt (#13) on the road in the next round. Las Animas' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Valdivia Valdivia.
