Regular Season Round 4: Los Leones - Las Animas 95-71
Date: January 23, 2023
Very expected game when 8th ranked Las Animas (1-3) were smashed by top-ranked Los Leones (3-0) in Quilpue 95-71 on Monday. Los Leones dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Las Animas' 32. Los Leones forced 20 Las Animas turnovers and outrebounded them 49-31 including a 19-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The winners were led by DR Congolese-Canadian forward Eric Kibi (198-1990, college: ACU) who scored that evening 15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international forward Darrol Jones (193-1994) supported him with 21 points and 5 rebounds. Five Los Leones players scored in double figures. Even 8 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists by the former international Diego Low (190-1997) did not help to save the game for Las Animas. Spanish Alejandro Vergara (196-1995) added 16 points for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Los Leones have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Ancud. Las Animas lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the twelfth place with three games lost. They share the position with Catolica and Puerto Montt. Los Leones will meet Puerto Varas (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Las Animas' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Valdivia Valdivia.
