There was no surprise when 16th ranked Rio Claro (6-22) was defeated at home by fourth ranked Minas (19-8) 97-79 on Thursday. Minas outrebounded Rio Claro 50-33 including 17 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The former international power forward Renan Lenz (207-1990, college: Utah) fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 18 rebounds for the winners. Forward Alexandre Paranhos (204-1992) chipped in a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). Four Minas players scored in double figures. Point guard Cassiano Bueno (189-1997) produced 23 points and 6 assists and Venezuelan Edgar Martinez (199-1997) added 13 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Minas maintains fourth position with 19-8 record. Rio Claro lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixteenth place with 22 games lost. Minas will meet at home Corinthians (#8) in the next round. Rio Claro will play against Cerrado (#17) in Brasilia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
