Thunderbolts edge Western Ballaz 77-74 to force BPBL Mayan Cup Game 3

The Belize City Thunderbolts held serve at home on Sunday evening, outlasting the Cayo Western Ballaz 77–74 in Game 2 of the BPBL Mayan Cup Finals at the Civic Center on Sunday, September 7, 2025. The three-point margin mirrored Game 1’s result—only this time, it was the Thunderbolts who came out on top, setting the stage for a winner-takes-all Game 3 in San Ignacio. Led by Tyrone Hall (190-G -1990, college: Queens, NY)’s 18 points and 11 rebounds, the Thunderbolts leaned on their physicality and depth to counter Cayo’s interior strength. Victor Evans played all 40 minutes, contributing 16 points, eight boards, and five assists, while Glency Lopez (180-G -1997, college: Midland CC) added 15 points and nine dimes in a commanding floor general performance. Matthew Young (C ) once again anchored the paint with 12 points and 10 rebounds, his second straight double-double of the series. Belize City’s bench chipped in timely minutes, with Eyan Rene (186-G ) knocking down two key threes and Luis Sosa Jr. providing hustle on both ends.
Cayo’s D’von Campbell led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Arik Nicholas (196-F, college: ACU) matched his Game 1 rebounding total with 12 boards and added 12 points. Jahiem Ciego (C) and Kyron Molina (G) combined for 23 points, but the Ballaz struggled from deep, converting just 7 of 26 three-point attempts.
Turnovers haunted Cayo again—24 in total—many of them in transition or under pressure from Belize City’s traps. Despite outshooting the Thunderbolts from the field (42% to 41.1%), the Ballaz couldn’t capitalize on late possessions, and time expired on them.
With both teams now owning a three-point win, the Mayan Cup Finals head back to the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio for a decisive Game 3 on Saturday, September 13. The Thunderbolts will look to carry momentum into hostile territory, while the Ballaz aim to reclaim their home-court edge and lift the Cup.
