Libobasquet Round 6: CAN Potosi loses to Amistad

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position, derby games and even winless team recording their first victory. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Round in Libobasque means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Sucre where host Amistad (5-1) edged league's leader CAN Potosi (4-2) 85-83 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of CAN Potosi. It was a key game for the second position in the league. They outrebounded CAN Potosi 49-35 including 35 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American point guard Kris Frazier (201, college: Peru St.) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 20 rebounds. Swingman Carlos Romero (190-84) chipped in 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Spanish Adriano Barrera (-92) who recorded 33 points (!!!) and 7 assists. Amistad have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 5-1 record having just one victory less than leader Pichincha which they share with defeated CAN Potosi. CAN Potosi at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. They share the position with CAN Oruro. They were replaced at the leadership position by Pichincha.
The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Rubair as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Rubair smashed 4th ranked Penarol at home 101-70. It was a good game for Venezuela guard Reimer Machado (185-89) who led his team to a victory with 27 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Gregory Curvelo contributed with 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Rubair's coach felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cuba swingman Marvin Cairo (201-91) replied with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds for Penarol. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Penarol lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the fifth place with four games lost.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Oruro: CAN Oruro (#3) and Carl A-Z (#3). Carl A-Z was defeated at home 97-104 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Carl A-Z. Sebastian Picton had a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!), 10 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners. The best for the losing side was Decorey Jones with a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds. CAN Oruro have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with CAN Potosi. Loser Carl A-Z keeps the third position with two games lost.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Potosi. Top-ranked Pichincha faced 4th ranked Calero. Guests from Pichincha (5-0) defeated host Calero (2-4) 79-72. TJ Robinson notched a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the effort. Pichincha's coach Sergio Salas allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Pichincha have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 5-0 record. Calero lost fourth consecutive game. Defending champion keeps the fourth place with four games lost.
AND1 La Paz can celebrate finally their first win this season after five consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat La Salle CBBA (1-5) 85-77 on Tuesday. The best player for the winners was Jeronimo Baron who had a double-double by scoring 31 points and 12 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. AND1 La Paz maintains sixth position with 1-5 record, which they share with defeated La Salle CBBA. It was La Salle CBBA's fourth loss in a row.

In the last game of round 6 Univ. Santa Cruz was defeated by La Salle Tarija in a road game 97-80.



Calero - Pichincha 72-79

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Potosi. Top-ranked Pichincha faced 4th ranked Calero. Guests from Pichincha (5-0) defeated host Calero (2-4) 79-72. They outrebounded Calero 43-25 including a 33-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. American forward TJ Robinson (203-89, college: LBSU) notched a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the effort and Beninese forward Muusa Dama (206-95, college: EIU, agency: Blacktop Management) supported him with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Pichincha's coach Sergio Salas allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even 25 points and 4 assists (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) by Pedro Gutierrez (182-96) did not help to save the game for Calero. American power forward Jon Cathey-Macklin (206-91, college: Tarleton St.) added 13 points and 4 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Pichincha have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 5-0 record. Calero lost fourth consecutive game. Defending champion keeps the fourth place with four games lost.

Carl A-Z - CAN Oruro 97-104

Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Oruro: CAN Oruro (#3) and Carl A-Z (#3). Carl A-Z was defeated at home 97-104 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Carl A-Z. CAN Oruro made 30-of-34 free shots (88.2 percent) during the game. Argentinian forward Sebastian Picton (196-92) had a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!), 10 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Argentinian guard Erbel De-Pietro (183-88) chipped in 36 points (!!!) during the contest. The best for the losing side was American Decorey Jones (201-90, college: Faulkner) with a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds and his fellow American import forward DeVaughn Jones (196, college: Midwestern St.) produced a double-double by scoring 29 points and 16 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. CAN Oruro have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with CAN Potosi. Loser Carl A-Z keeps the third position with two games lost.

AND1 La Paz - La Salle CBBA 85-77

AND1 La Paz can celebrate finally their first win this season after five consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat La Salle CBBA (1-5) 85-77 on Tuesday. AND1 La Paz made 32-of-40 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game, while La Salle CBBA only scored thirteen points from the stripe. AND1 La Paz forced 23 La Salle CBBA turnovers. La Salle CBBA was plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was Argentinian swingman Jeronimo Baron (196-95) who had a double-double by scoring 31 points and 12 rebounds. Cuba forward Freddy Marin (202-92) chipped in 19 points. Four AND1 La Paz players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was Argentinian power forward Leonardo Catelotti (202-91) who recorded 24 points and Uruguayan forward Miguel Barriola (191-90) added 18 points and 4 steals respectively. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. AND1 La Paz maintains sixth position with 1-5 record, which they share with defeated La Salle CBBA. It was La Salle CBBA's fourth loss in a row.

La Salle Tarija - Univ. Santa Cruz 97-80

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when one of their biggest challengers Univ. Santa Cruz (1-3) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked La Salle Tarija (2-4) 97-80 on Tuesday. La Salle Tarija made 22-of-26 free shots (84.6 percent) during the game. La Salle Tarija outrebounded Univ. Santa Cruz 47-31 including 35 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was Nigeria-American George Williams (198-90, college: Wayland Baptist) who scored 31 points and 7 rebounds. Point guard Martin Ochoa (185-94) chipped in 25 points and 7 rebounds. Williams is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. La Salle Tarija's coach Henry Paruta used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Richard Ford (205-85, college: So.Poly State) who recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and center Luis Mercado (205-97) added 16 points respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. La Salle Tarija moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Calero. Loser Univ. Santa Cruz keeps the fourth position with three games lost.
