Libobasquet Round 11: Rubair loses to CAN Potosi

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in Libobasque. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with change at the leadership position and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

There was a change at the Libobasque leadership position after last games. Round 11 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Rubair (6-2). They were edged by second ranked CAN Potosi (7-2) 102-99 on Wednesday night. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Rubair. It was a key game for the top position in the league. CAN Potosi looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. It was a great evening for Spanish guard Adriano Barrera (186-92) who led his team to a victory scoring 39 points (!!!) and 6 assists. Italian-Argentinian forward Agustin Ambrosino (203-90, college: BYU, agency: Interperformances) helped adding 28 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Venezuelan guard Gregory Curvelo (190-90) responded with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). CAN Potosi have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Rubair at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. They were joined at the leadership position by Pichincha who have the same record. Rubair will play next round against strong Penarol trying to make it back to the top of the standings. CAN Potosi will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Univ. Santa Cruz on the road.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Amistad (6-3) against fifth ranked Calero (3-6) on Tuesday night. Host Amistad was crushed by Calero in Sucre 100-80. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Warren Jones (190-94, college: Green Bay) who led the winners and scored 36 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Raul Salvatierra accounted for 13 points and 19 rebounds. American point guard Kris Frazier (201, college: Peru St.) came up with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 18 rebounds for Amistad in the defeat. Defending champion maintains fifth place with 3-6 record. Amistad at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. Calero will play against league's leader Pichincha at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Amistad will play against La Salle Tarija and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The game between Top Four teams took place in Pichincha. Leader host Pichincha (10-0) smashed 3rd placed Carl A-Z (5-5) 90-69. Rene Calvo orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Pichincha have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain first place with 10-0 record. Carl A-Z at the other side keeps the third position with five games lost. Pichincha's next round opponent will be Calero (#5) in Potosi. Carl A-Z will play at home against AND1 La Paz and hope to win that game.
The game in was also quite interesting. Fourth ranked La Salle Tarija (4-6) played at the court of 5th ranked Univ. Santa Cruz (1-5). La Salle Tarija defeated Univ. Santa Cruz 84-68 on Tuesday. It was a great evening for George Williams who led his team to a victory scoring 31 points. La Salle Tarija's coach Henry Paruta used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. La Salle Tarija maintains fourth place with 4-6 record. Univ. Santa Cruz lost their fourth game in a row. They dropped to the sixth position with five games lost. La Salle Tarija will face league's second-placed Amistad in Sucre in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Univ. Santa Cruz will play at home against the league's leader CAN Potosi (#1) and hope to win that game.

In the last game of round 11 AND1 La Paz lost to La Salle CBBA on the opponent's court 72-80.



Penarol - CAN Oruro 95-103

The game between Top Four teams took place in Quillacollo. 4th placed host Penarol (2-5) lost to third ranked CAN Oruro (5-4) 103-95. CAN Oruro dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Penarol's 42. The best player for the winners was Argentinian forward Sebastian Picton (196-92) who had a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). Argentinian guard Erbel De-Pietro (183-88) chipped in 31 points and 7 rebounds. Cuban swingman Marvin Cairo (201-91) produced a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds and Cuban forward Alejandro Alvarez (194-92) added 25 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. CAN Oruro maintains third place with 5-4 record behind leader Pichincha. Loser Penarol keeps the fourth position with five games lost. CAN Oruro will meet at home La Salle CBBA (#5) in the next round. Penarol will play against the league's second-placed Rubair and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Amistad - Calero 80-100

Very important is a home loss of second ranked Amistad (6-3) against fifth ranked Calero (3-6) on Tuesday night. Host Amistad was crushed by Calero in Sucre 100-80. They made 21-of-25 charity shots (84.0 percent) during the game. Amistad was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. There was a minor upset in Cochabamba where their close opponent AND1 La Paz (1-7) was defeated by sixth ranked La Salle CBBA (2-7) 80-72 on Tuesday. La Salle CBBA dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to AND1 La Paz's 32. La Salle CBBA forced 22 AND1 La Paz turnovers. It was a great evening for Argentinian power forward Leonardo Catelotti (202-91) who led his team to a victory scoring 23 points and 7 rebounds. Uruguayan forward Miguel Barriola (191-90) helped adding 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Cuban center Dariel Maza (-91) responded with 23 points and 8 rebounds and Cuban forward Freddy Marin (202-92) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds. AND1 La Paz's coach Igor Ramirez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. La Salle CBBA moved-up to fifth place. Loser AND1 La Paz keeps the sixth position with seven games lost. La Salle CBBA will face higher ranked CAN Oruro (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. AND1 La Paz will play against Carl A-Z in Oruro and hope to win that game.

The game in was also quite interesting. Fourth ranked La Salle Tarija (4-6) played at the court of 5th ranked Univ. Santa Cruz (1-5). La Salle Tarija defeated Univ. Santa Cruz 84-68 on Tuesday. La Salle Tarija dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Univ. Santa Cruz's 30. They outrebounded Univ. Santa Cruz 47-35 including a 40-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for Nigerian-American George Williams (198-90, college: Wayland Baptist) who led his team to a victory scoring 31 points. Argentinian Rodrigo Acuna (198-95) helped adding 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Williams is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. La Salle Tarija's coach Henry Paruta used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Richard Ford (205-85, college: So.Poly State) responded with 28 points and 9 rebounds and guard Diego Burgos (-93) scored 12 points and 5 rebounds.
