Libobasquet Round 13: Penarol beats Rubair by three after a very close game

Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most exciting game of round 13 in the Libobasque took place in Quillacollo. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of much higher ranked Rubair (7-2) to fourth ranked Penarol (2-6) 94-91 on Wednesday evening. Penarol outrebounded Rubair 41-26 including 29 on the defensive glass. 24 personal fouls committed by Rubair helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of Cuban swingman Marvin Cairo (201-91) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 40 points (!!!), 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Teodoro Romero contributed with 19 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Venezuelan guard Gregory Curvelo (190-90) answered with a double-double by scoring 29 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for Rubair. Despite that victory Penarol went down to fifth position due to points difference. Rubair at the other side keeps the second place with two games lost. Penarol are looking forward to face Univ. Santa Cruz (#6) in the next round. Rubair will play against Univ. Santa Cruz (#6) and is hoping to win this game.

Cuban swingman Marvin Cairo (201-91) stepped up and scored 28 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and Alejandro Alvarez chipped in 12 points. At the losing side American forward Richard Ford (205-85, college: So.Poly State) responded with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Despite that victory Penarol went down to fifth position due to points difference. Univ. Santa Cruz lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the sixth place with six games lost. Penarol will again play against Univ. Santa Cruz (#6) in the next round. Univ. Santa Cruz will play against the league's second-placed Rubair to get more than just one victory in their record.
An interesting game for CAN Potosi (8-2) which hosted in Oruro their biggest opponent Amistad (6-4). First ranked CAN Potosi had an easy win 87-61. Agustin Ambrosino nailed a double-double by scoring 24 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. Kris Frazier came up with 25 points and 8 rebounds for Amistad in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. CAN Potosi have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-2 record. Amistad lost third consecutive game. They keep the second position with four games lost.
Libobasque top team - Pichincha (11-0) added another victory to their record. This time they beat fifth ranked Calero (3-7) 87-80. Jovonni Shuler fired 20 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. Calero's coach Sandro Patino rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated Pichincha have an impressive series of eleven victories in a row. They maintain first place with 11-0 record. Defending champion Calero dropped to the fourth position with seven games lost.
The game in La Paz supposed to be also quite interesting. Fourth ranked La Salle Tarija (5-6) played at the court of 6th ranked AND1 La Paz (1-8). La Salle Tarija smashed AND1 La Paz 85-63 on Tuesday. It was a very good performance for Martin Ochoa who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 14 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. La Salle Tarija maintains fourth place with 5-6 record. AND1 La Paz lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with eight games lost.



AND1 La Paz - La Salle Tarija 63-85

The game in La Paz supposed to be also quite interesting. Fourth ranked La Salle Tarija (5-6) played at the court of 6th ranked AND1 La Paz (1-8). La Salle Tarija smashed AND1 La Paz 85-63 on Tuesday. La Salle Tarija dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to AND1 La Paz's 34. They outrebounded AND1 La Paz 41-26 including a 37-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a very good performance for the former international point guard Martin Ochoa (185-94) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 14 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Nigerian-American George Williams (198-90, college: Wayland Baptist) contributed with 19 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Worth to mention Williams played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Four La Salle Tarija players scored in double figures. Cuban center Dariel Maza (-91) answered with 19 points and 8 rebounds and Cuban forward Freddy Marin (202-92) added 13 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for AND1 La Paz. Pichincha - Calero 87-80

Libobasque top team - Pichincha (11-0) added another victory to their record. This time they beat fifth ranked Calero (3-7) 87-80. American swingman Jovonni Shuler (195-87, college: SSU) fired 20 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. His fellow American import forward TJ Robinson (203-89, college: LBSU) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Shuler is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Argentinian swingman Alejo Montes (191-91) produced 24 points and international Pedro Gutierrez (182-96) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists respectively for lost side. Four Pichincha and five Calero players scored in double figures. Calero's coach Sandro Patino rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Ambrosino is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American point guard Kris Frazier (201, college: Peru St.) came up with 25 points and 8 rebounds and guard Camilo Duenas (-91) added 5 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Amistad in the defeat.
