Libobasquet Round 8: Pichincha beat La Salle in the most crucial game of the week

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Tarija. Second ranked Pichincha faced 4th ranked La Salle. Guests from Pichincha (6-1) defeated host La Salle (3-3) 86-69. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of La Salle. Pichincha forced 19 La Salle turnovers. The best player for the winners was the former international swingman Rene Calvo (193-1993) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. Diego Santana chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds. Pichincha's coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Argentinian Joaquin Gamazo (198-1991) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 19 rebounds for the hosts. Pichincha have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 6-1 record having just one point less than leader Leones. La Salle at the other side keeps the fourth place with three games lost. They share the position with Atomico. Pichincha are looking forward to face UNITEP (#7) in the next round where they are favorite. La Salle will play against Univ.Sucre and is hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
Bottom-ranked Tenis (0-7) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 92-81 loss to eighth ranked UNITEP (2-5) in . Argentinian Francisco Bonja orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 32 points and 13 rebounds. Nicolas Rodriguez contributed with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American forward Benjamin Merritt (202-1992, college: Urbana) replied with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds for Tenis. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. UNITEP moved-up to seventh place. Tenis at the other side still closes the standings with seven games lost. UNITEP will play against league's second-placed Pichincha on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Tenis will play against Atomico (#4) and hope to get finally their first victory.

Loser Saracho dropped to the sixth position with four games lost. Atomico will meet bottom-ranked Tenis (#9) in the next round where they are favorite. Saracho will play against the league's leader Leones and hope to secure a win.

In the last game of round 8 San Simon defeated Univ.Sucre in a road game 75-58.



Atomico - Saracho 76-71

The game in was also quite interesting. 5th ranked Saracho (3-4) played at the court of sixth ranked Atomico (3-3). Atomico managed to secure a 5-point victory 76-71 on Friday. Atomico outrebounded Saracho 50-32 including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of Argentinian Rodrigo Acuna (198-1995) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds and Argentinian guard Erbel De Pietro (185-1988) who added 16 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Atomico's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Argentinian forward Facundo Sanz (197-1996, agency: BIG) responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and Argentinian power forward Nicolas Gimenez (203-1994) scored 23 points and 5 rebounds. Atomico moved-up to fourth place, which they share with La Salle. Loser Saracho dropped to the sixth position with four games lost. Atomico will meet bottom-ranked Tenis (#9) in the next round where they are favorite. Saracho will play against the league's leader Leones and hope to secure a win.

Univ.Sucre - San Simon 58-75

There was no surprise when 8th ranked Univ.Sucre (1-5) was defeated at home by third ranked San Simon (6-2) 75-58 on Friday. San Simon outrebounded Univ.Sucre 45-32 including 34 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of Andres Trujillo (-1999) who helped to win the game recording 22 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and American guard Akil McClain (188-1997, college: IU Kokomo) who added 24 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. McClain is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. American guard Haylen Washington (196-1994, college: Co.Georgia) responded with 21 points and Amado Ledezma scored 15 points. Univ.Sucre's coach rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. San Simon maintains third position with 6-2 record having just two point less than leader Leones. Loser Univ.Sucre keeps the eighth place with five games lost. San Simon will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Univ.Sucre will play against La Salle (#5) and hope to win that game.
