NBB Round 25: Minas edge Paschoalotto/Bauru by two points

The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Fifth-ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (17-10) made lots of trouble for second ranked Minas (25-4) in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday. Minas managed to secure only two-point victory 81-79. However their fans expected easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Paschoalotto/Bauru. American guard David Jackson (190-82, college: Penn St.) fired 16 points for the winners. Bahamas David Nesbitt (203-91, college: St.Thomas, FL) chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds. International Gabriel Jau Galvanini (202-98) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds for lost side. Minas have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 25-4 record having four points less than leader Flamengo. Paschoalotto/Bauru at the other side keeps the fifth position with ten games lost. Minas will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Paschoalotto/Bauru will play at home against Mogi (#10) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Leader Flamengo delivered the twenty eighth victory. This time they crushed 13th ranked Cerrado (7-20) 88-57 in Rio de Janeiro. Worth to mention a great performance of power forward Rafael Rachel (205-0) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Leonardo Demetrio contributed with 17 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Canadian-American swingman Nicholas Wiggins (198-91, college: Z*Orangeville A's, agency: BIG) answered with 16 points for Cerrado. Cerrado's coach Bruno Lopes gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Flamengo (28-2) have an impressive series of fifteen victories in a row. They maintain first place. Cerrado lost sixth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the thirteenth position with 20 games lost. Flamengo will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Cerrado will play at home against Pinheiros (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Caxias do Sul between Pato Basquete and Caxias do Sul. Eleventh ranked Pato Basquete (12-17) got a very close victory on the road over 12th ranked Caxias do Sul (9-21). Pato Basquete managed to escape with a 2-point win 85-83 in the fight for the eleventh place. Augusto Leao stepped up and scored 21 points and 4 assists for the winners. Pato Basquete's coach Dede Barbosa used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side Antonio Ferreira responded with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Pato Basquete maintains eleventh place with 12-17 record. Newly promoted Caxias do Sul keeps the twelfth position with 21 games lost. Pato Basquete will meet higher ranked UniFacisa (#9) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Caxias do Sul will have a break next round.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Fortaleza, where 7th ranked Vivo/Franca (15-15) lost to tenth ranked Fortaleza (13-14) in a road game 69-84. Thiago Mathias nailed a double-double by scoring 10 points and 15 rebounds for the winning side. Fortaleza's coach Alberto Bial allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Fortaleza moved-up to eighth place. Vivo/Franca at the other side keeps the seventh position with 15 games lost. Fortaleza's next round opponent will be Campo Mourao (#15) at home and are hoping to win another game.

Erik Thomas fired 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Paulistano. They maintain fourth place with 20-8 record. Pinheiros lost their eleventh game in a row. They keep the fourteenth position with 22 games lost. Paulistano will have a break next round. Pinheiros will play on the road against Cerrado (#13) in Brasilia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 25 Sao Paulo crushed Campo Mourao in a road game 99-74.



Campo Mourao - Sao Paulo 74-99

There was no surprise when 15th ranked Campo Mourao (5-22) was crushed at home by third ranked Sao Paulo (23-7) 99-74 on Tuesday. The former international power forward Renan Lenz (207-90, college: Utah) fired a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!) and 16 rebounds for the winners. American point guard Kenny Dawkins (172-87, college: Lamar) chipped in 25 points and 8 assists. Four Sao Paulo players scored in double figures. American guard Anton Cook (189-95, college: SE Oklahoma) produced 23 points and Argentinian point guard Juan Pablo Figueroa (185-86, agency: Interperformances) added 5 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists respectively for lost side. Campo Mourao's coach Emerson Souza already knew that his team would not have a big chance, so allowed to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Sao Paulo. They maintain third place with 23-7 record having five points less than leader Flamengo. Campo Mourao lost their fourteenth game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the fifteenth position with 22 games lost. Sao Paulo will have a break next round. Campo Mourao will play on the road against Fortaleza (#8) and hope to win that game.
