LDB U20 Round 18: Derby game ends with Pinheiros' defeat of Rio Claro

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Sao Paulo: Pinheiros (#1) and Rio Claro (#3). Rio Claro was smashed at home by 54 points 49-103 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Rio Claro. Pinheiros held Rio Claro to an opponent 24.3 percent shooting from the field compared to 50.6 percent accuracy of the winners and made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. Pinheiros outrebounded Rio Claro 54-29 including a 40-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for point guard Gabriel Campos (179-1) who led his team to a victory with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Power forward Maicon Waldemar (205-0) contributed with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Guard Joao Vittor (190-1) replied with 10 points for Rio Claro. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Pinheiros (10-0) have an impressive ten-game winning streak. They maintain first position with a perfect record of 10 victories in a row, which they share with Paulistano. Rio Claro at the other side keeps the third place with four games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Minas (6-4) against eighth ranked Brasilia (4-6) on Saturday night. Host Minas was defeated by Brasilia in a tough game in Belo Horizonte 84-91. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Minas. Guard Gabriel Santos (185-1) had a double-double by scoring 28 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Carlos Silva chipped in 12 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was guard Aieser Batista (198-0) with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 18 rebounds. Minas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Brasilia moved-up to seventh place, which they share with U. Corinthians. Minas at the other side keeps the third position with four games lost. They share it with 3 other teams.
Bottom-ranked Cearense is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their tenth consecutive match to tenth ranked UniFacisa (2-8) 71-51 on Friday evening. Gabriel Machado notched a double-double by scoring 19 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort. Even 19 points by Davi Botelho did not help to save the game for Cearense. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. UniFacisa moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Coritiba. Loser Cearense still closes the standings with ten games lost. They share the position with Pato.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 18: Cerrado beat Mogi on the road 79-71. Praia destroyed Brasilia on its own court 95-62. Minas managed to outperform Flamengo in Belo Horizonte 77-72. Praia managed to beat UniFacisa at home 93-88. Flamengo crushed Cearense on the opponent's court 100-24.
The most impressive performance of 18th round was 28 points and 20 rebounds by Matheus Maciel of Flamengo.

Mogi - Cerrado 71-79

No shocking result in a game when second ranked Cerrado (8-2) beat 9th ranked Mogi (3-7) in Mogi das Cruze 79-71 on Friday. Guard Daniel Von Haydin (194-99) notched 26 points to lead the effort and center Sergio Conceicao (208-0) supported him with 10 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Cerrado players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds by center Felipe Cardoso (212-0) did not help to save the game for Mogi. Luiz Mendonc (-0) added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Mogi's coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Cerrado maintains second position with 8-2 record having just two points less than leader Pinheiros, which they share with Corinthians. Mogi lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth place with seven games lost. They share the position with ADRM.

Everything could happen in Vitoria at the game between two tied teams. Both seventh ranked Praia and 8th ranked Brasilia had identical 4-5 record. This time Praia used a home court advantage and smashed the opponent from Brasilia 95-62 on Friday night. Praia dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Brasilia's 34. Praia forced 32 Brasilia turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists comparing to just 19 passes made by Brasilia's players. Guard Gabriel Duarte (189-1) notched 26 points and 5 rebounds to lead the effort and forward Gabriel Cunha (188-0) supported him with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
