NBB Round 16: Minas edge UNIFACISA by three points

Seventh-ranked UNIFACISA (5-6) made lots of trouble for third ranked Minas (11-2) in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday. Minas managed to secure only three-point victory 71-68. However their fans expected much easier game. 25 personal fouls committed by UNIFACISA helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. International point guard Alexey Borges (185-95) fired 15 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Bahamas forward Tavario Miller (203-94, college: Texas A&M) chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots). Naturalized American guard Kevin Crescenzi (193-93, college: Dartmouth) produced 17 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Minas have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Flamengo. UNIFACISA at the other side dropped to the eighth position with six games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Undefeated leader Vivo/Franca delivered the thirteenth consecutive victory. This time they beat 17th ranked Brasilia (2-12) 87-79 in Sao Paulo. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international point guard Georginho de Paula (197-96) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Lucas Silva contributed with 21 points for the winners. Vivo/Franca's coach Helinho Garcia allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American-Argentinian guard Erik Thomas (195-95, college: New Orleans) replied with 24 points and 9 rebounds for Brasilia. Undefeated Vivo/Franca (13-0) have an impressive 13-game winning streak. They maintain first position with a perfect record of 13 victories in a row. Brasilia lost fifth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with 12 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
A very close game took place in Mogi das Cruzes between Paschoalotto/Bauru and Mogi. Fifth ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (9-3) got a very close victory on the road over 10th ranked Mogi (5-8). Paschoalotto/Bauru managed to escape with a 3-point win 79-76 on Monday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Worth to mention a great performance of Alex Garcia who helped to win the game recording 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. At the losing side Wesley Alves responded with 21 points and 4 assists. Paschoalotto/Bauru moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sao Paulo. Mogi lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eleventh position with eight games lost. They share it with Rio Claro and Cerrado. Paschoalotto/Bauru will meet at home Corinthians (#15) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Mogi will play against Caxias do Sul (#6) and hope to secure a win.

Rest of the games of round 16 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Fortaleza was defeated by Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro 91-74. Mogi was beaten by Pinheiros at home 65-82. Sao Paulo won against Paulistano on the opponent's court 75-60.
The best stats of 16th round was 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists by Tyrone Curnell of Sao Paulo.



Mogi - Bauru 76-79

A very close game took place in Mogi das Cruzes between Paschoalotto/Bauru and Mogi. Fifth ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (9-3) got a very close victory on the road over 10th ranked Mogi (5-8). Paschoalotto/Bauru managed to escape with a 3-point win 79-76 on Monday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Worth to mention a great performance of international guard Alex Garcia (190-80, agency: Interperformances) who helped to win the game recording 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and naturalized American point guard Larry Taylor (183-80, college: MWSU) who added 19 points and 5 assists during the contest. Four Paschoalotto/Bauru and five Mogi players scored in double figures. Paschoalotto/Bauru moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sao Paulo. Mogi lost third consecutive game. There was no surprise in Rio de Janeiro where 7th ranked Fortaleza (5-7) was defeated by third ranked Flamengo (11-2) 91-74 on Tuesday. Flamengo outrebounded Fortaleza 44-33 including 32 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international center Vitor Faverani (213-88) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and international forward Tulio Da Silva (203-96, college: Missouri St.) who added 15 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side Maozinha Pereira (200-0) responded with 17 points and 9 rebounds and point guard Pedro Lobo (192-2) scored 13 points. Five Flamengo and four Fortaleza players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Flamengo have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Minas. Loser Fortaleza dropped to the ninth position with seven games lost. They share it with Pato Basquete. Flamengo will meet Cerrado (#13) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Fortaleza will have a break next round.
