LBF Round 17 (Regular Season): Corinthians beat Sao Jose by three after a very close game

The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute surprises and upsets. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most exciting game of round 17 in the LBF took place in Sao Jose. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 5th ranked Sao Jose (9-8) to third ranked Corinthians (12-3) 69-66 on Wednesday evening. Cuban center Nahomis Vargas-Hardy (188-2003) orchestrated the victory by scoring 8 points and 14 rebounds. International guard Alana Goncalo (166-1994) contributed with 15 points for the winners. Guard Jennifer Munoz (170-1991) answered with 18 points and 8 rebounds for Sao Jose. Corinthians maintains third place with 12-3 record having just three points less than leader Sampaio. Sao Jose at the other side keeps the fifth position with eight games lost. They share it with Campinas. Corinthians are looking forward to face league's leader Sampaio in Sampaio Basquete in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Sao Jose will play on the road against the league's second-placed SESI (#2) in Araraquara and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.

The former international power forward Leticia Rodrigues (187-1995) responded with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Sampaio have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-2 record. Santo Andre lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with 12 games lost. Sampaio will play against Corinthians (#3) in Vila Medon in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Santo Andre will play on the road against Blumenau (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: Campinas smashed Blumenau on the road 71-50. SESI destroyed Cerrado on its own court 77-58. Bottom-ranked Maringa was outscored by Mesquita in a road game 91-58.
The most impressive performance of 17th round was 20 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists by Mayra Caicedo of Mesquita.

Sampaio - Santo Andre 108-49

LBF top team - Sampaio (14-2) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed ninth ranked Santo Andre (4-12) in Sampaio Basquete 108-49. Sampaio dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Santo Andre's 26. They outrebounded Santo Andre 49-25 including a 39-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Sampaio players were unselfish on offense dishing 28 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Santo Andre's players. The former international forward Thayna Silva (180-1996) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 15 rebounds for the winners and Leticia Josefino chipped in 25 points and 6 rebounds. Five Sampaio players scored in double figures. The former international power forward Leticia Rodrigues (187-1995) responded with 9 points and 7 rebounds and forward Marcella Prande (180-2005) scored 12 points. Blumenau - Campinas 50-71

No shocking result in a game when sixth ranked Campinas (9-8) crushed on the road 10th ranked Blumenau (2-14) 71-50. Campinas forced 20 Blumenau turnovers and outrebounded them 47-30 including 18 on the offensive glass. Campinas players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Argentinian Agustina Marin (170-2003) stepped up and scored 21 points for the winners and the former international Izabella Sangalli (182-1995) chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds. Campinas' coach Bernardo Dos Santos felt very confident using 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Maiara Dias responded with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds and guard Vitoria Romualdo (166-2004) scored 15 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Campinas moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Sao Jose. Blumenau lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with 14 games lost. Campinas will play against bottom-ranked Maringa (#11) at home in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Blumenau will play against Santo Andre and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

SESI dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Cerrado's 26. SESI forced 25 Cerrado turnovers. The former international Vitoria Domingos (181-1996) stepped up and scored 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners and power forward Glenda Cruz (182-1994) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. The former international point guard Joice Rodrigues (174-1986) responded with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals and the former international forward Joice Coelho (175-1993) scored 11 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. SESI have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 13-2 record behind leader Sampaio. Cerrado at the other side keeps the eighth position with ten games lost. SESI will play against Sao Jose (#5) at home in the next round. Cerrado will have a break next round.

Rather predictable result when seventh ranked Mesquita (8-9) rolled over at home bottom-ranked Maringa (1-17) 91-58. Mesquita dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Maringa's 36. Mesquita forced 21 Maringa turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Colombian guard Mayra Caicedo (161-2000, college: Tarleton St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists for the winners and Honduran guard Nelly Rapalo (173-1999) chipped in 22 points and 6 rebounds. Four Mesquita players scored in double figures. Center Lorena Silva (189-1998) responded with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds and forward Thailane Monteiro (185-2000) scored 10 points and 8 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Mesquita maintains seventh place with 8-9 record. Maringa lost seventeenth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 17 lost games. Mesquita will play against higher ranked Ourinhos (#4) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Maringa will play against Campinas (#6) to get more than just one victory in their record.
