LBF Round 18 (Regular Season): Sampaio defeat Corinthians in the closest game of the week

The games are now more important than at the beginning of the Regular Season. We may still expect few shocking results in upcoming 3 rounds. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most exciting game of round 18 in the LBF took place in Vila Medon. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 3rd ranked Corinthians (12-4) to first ranked Sampaio (15-2) 90-88 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Corinthians. Sampaio had a 20-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists. The former international guard Taina Da Paixao (173-1991) scored 25 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the former international swingman Carina Martins (171-1992) chipped in 12 points and 10 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was the former international forward Raphaella Monteiro (181-1995) with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Sampaio have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 15-2 record. Corinthians at the other side keeps the third place with four games lost. Sampaio are looking forward to face Sao Jose (#5) on the road in the next round. Corinthians will play against Blumenau and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked SESI (13-3) against fifth ranked Sao Jose (10-8) on Wednesday night. Host SESI was defeated by Sao Jose in Araraquara 68-58. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of SESI. Colombian guard Manuela Rios (163-1997) notched 20 points and 7 assists to lead the effort and Laurah Dos Santos supported her with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Even 16 points and 5 rebounds by the former international Vitoria Domingos (181-1996) did not help to save the game for SESI. SESI's coach Fabio Appolinario rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Sao Jose maintains fifth position with 10-8 record, which they share with Campinas. SESI at the other side keeps the second place with three games lost. Sao Jose will play against league's leader Sampaio in Sampaio Basquete in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. SESI will play on the road against Campinas and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Ourinhos (#4) was upset in Mesquita by seventh ranked Mesquita 54-49. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ourinhos. The best player for the winners was Mayra Caicedo who scored 13 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Jeanne Morais who recorded 16 points and 6 rebounds. Mesquita maintains seventh position with 9-9 record. Loser Ourinhos keeps the fourth place with six games lost. Mesquita will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Ourinhos will play against Cerrado (#8) in Brasilia and hope to secure a win.

In the last two games of round 18 Santo Andre won against Blumenau on the opponent's court 68-66. Campinas outscored Maringa in a home game 72-50.

Blumenau - Santo Andre 66-68

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 10th ranked Blumenau's (2-15) home loss to ninth ranked Santo Andre (5-12) 66-68 on Tuesday. Santo Andre outrebounded Blumenau 50-39 including 20 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was Cuban point guard Ineidis Casanova (162-1988) who scored 24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Forward Marcella Prande (180-2005) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Melissa Oliveira (180-2001) who recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists and Maiara Dias added 19 points and 10 rebounds respectively. Santo Andre maintains ninth position with 5-12 record. Blumenau lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the tenth place with 15 games lost. Santo Andre will meet at home bottom-ranked Maringa (#11) in the next round. Blumenau will play against Corinthians in Vila Medon and hope to secure a win.

Campinas - Maringa 72-50

Very predictable result when sixth ranked Campinas (10-8) smashed at home bottom-ranked Maringa (1-18) 72-50 on Wednesday. Campinas dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Maringa's 26. Campinas forced 23 Maringa turnovers and outrebounded them 52-37 including a 39-28 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was the former international Izabella Sangalli (182-1995) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Guard Julia Letty (165-2003) chipped in 12 points. Four Campinas players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Thailane Monteiro (185-2000) who recorded 13 points and 8 rebounds and center Lorena Silva (189-1998) added 7 points and 4 assists respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Campinas moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Sao Jose. Maringa lost eighteenth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 18 lost games. Campinas will meet at home league's second-placed SESI in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Maringa will play against Santo Andre (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
