Paulista Round 6 (Regular Season): No surprise as #1 Corinthians defeat Sorocabana

Paulista top team - Corinthians (6-0) managed to deliver another win on Friday. This time they beat eighth ranked Sorocabana (2-5) 78-64. Corinthians shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 54.2 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The former international point guard Elio Corazza (195-1989, college: Miami Dade CC) scored 15 points and 7 assists to lead the charge for the winners and power forward Victao Camilo (203-1997) chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was Danilo Penteado (199-1999) with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated Corinthians have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 6-0 record. Sorocabana at the other side dropped to the ninth place with five games lost. They share the position with Pinheiros. Corinthians' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sao Paulo Sesi/Franca.
Bottom-ranked Mandic Basket (0-7) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their seventh consecutive match to tenth ranked Osasco (2-4) 81-75. Guard Dalaqua Almentra (183-2000) notched 18 points and 5 rebounds to lead the effort and Anthony Harris supported him with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Even 11 points and 8 rebounds by Leonardo Jacon (199-1996, college: Southeastern) did not help to save the game for Mandic Basket. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Osasco moved-up to eighth place. Mandic Basket at the other side still closes the standings with seven games lost. Osasco will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Mandic Basket will play on the road against Mogi (#6) in Mogi das Cruzes and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Sao Paulo was also quite interesting. Third ranked Sao Jose (5-1) played at the court of 7th ranked Pinheiros (2-5). Sao Jose defeated Pinheiros 87-76 on Friday. The best player for the winners was Adyel Borges who scored 24 points and 6 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Caua De Souza who recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Sao Jose have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Sesi/Franca. Pinheiros lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth position with five games lost. They share it with Sorocabana. Sao Jose will meet at home Paulistano (#4) in the next round. Pinheiros will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 6 Bauru lost to Sesi/Franca on the opponent's court 79-85. Rio Claro managed to outperform Mogi in a home game 75-71.

Rather expected game in Sao Paulo where 5th ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (3-3) was defeated by third ranked Vivo/Franca (5-1) 85-79 on Friday. Sesi/Franca dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Paschoalotto/Bauru's 28. The best player for the winners was the former international center Cristiano Felicio (210-1992, college: Oregon) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds. American guard David Jackson (192-1982, college: Penn State) chipped in 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Vivo/Franca's coach Helinho Garcia used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. There was a small surprise when seventh ranked Rio Claro (3-4) defeated at home 5th ranked Mogi (3-3) 75-71 on Saturday. The best player for the winners was Bosnian guard Marko Rikalo (187-1994) who scored 19 points and 4 assists. Power forward Matheus Bonfim (206-1999) chipped in a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Raffael Mencarini (187-2001) who recorded 15 points and 5 rebounds (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!) and swingman Anderson Barbosa (192-2000) added 13 points and 4 assists respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Rio Claro maintains seventh position with 3-4 record.
