Penn Named NEC Co-Player of the Week

LIU men's basketball junior Eral Penn (201-F) was named the Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week presented by Pilot, it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Penn shared the honors with FDU's Jahlil Jenkins.

Penn developed into a near unstoppable weapon over the course of January, and last week was the driving force for the Sharks, who took over first place after winning two-of-three games. Penn did it all, posting three consecutive double-doubles while averaging 20.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.7 blocks and 3.0 steals. He hit at a 67.6 percent clip from the field and made all four of his three-point shots. Penn recorded a career-high 24 points on 10-12 shooting, and added 11 boards and four steals in LIU's 78-68 victory over Merrimack on Thursday.

Two days later he caught fire from three-point range, going 4-4 from downtown on his way to a 22-point, 13-rebound outing and co-MVP honors as LIU downed St. Francis Brooklyn, 102-88, in the annual Battle of Brooklyn rivalry game. Penn ranks fifth in the NEC in scoring (16.9), third in rebounding (9.6), second in field goal percentage (.602), sixth in steals (2.1), third in blocks (1.7) and first in double-doubles (seven).
