Liga Wplay Round 5 (Regular Season): Cafeteros hand first defeat to Storm

The Regular Season in Liga WPlay just ended. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Storm (4-1) recorded its first loss in San Andres Island on Tuesday night. Hosts were defeated by fourth ranked Cafeteros (4-1) 78-71. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Storm. The best player for the winners was Dominican Luis Montero (203-1993, college: South Plains) who scored 35 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Venezuelan forward Luis Bethelmy (200-1986) chipped in 14 points and 8 rebounds. Panamanian Josimar Ayarza (205-1987, college: Southern Miss) produced 17 points and 8 rebounds for the hosts. Cafeteros have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Team Cali and Carrib.Storm.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Bogota. Leader Titanes faced 4th placed Piratas. Guests from Barranquilla (5-0) smashed host Piratas (3-2) 118-83. Dominican-Puerto Rican swingman Jonathan Rodriguez (196-1987, college: Campbell) orchestrated the victory by scoring 31 points and 8 rebounds. Jhornan Zamora contributed with 27 points and 4 assists for the winners. American guard Tristan Jarrett (193-1998, college: Jackson St.) answered with 19 points for Piratas. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Titanes have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Piratas at the other side dropped to the fifth place with two games lost. They share the position with Motilones.
Cimarrones can celebrate their first win this season after four consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat Tigrillos (1-4) 80-75 on Monday. Windi Graterol stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Tariq Christian responded with 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Cimarrones left bottom position moving up to ninth place, which they share with Sabios and Tigrillos.

Other games of round 5 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Bucaros defeated Corsarios in Bucaramanga 86-77. Motilones smashed Condores at home 91-53. Sabios were destroyed by Team Cali on the opponent's court 101-68.
The best stats of 5th round was 19 points and 8 rebounds by Tirrell Brown of Team Cali.




Cimarrones - Tigrillos 80-75

Cimarrones can celebrate their first win this season after four consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat Tigrillos (1-4) 80-75 on Monday. Cimarrones made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. Venezuelan center Windi Graterol (204-1986, agency: Pro Sports) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and Venezuelan point guard Leonardo Palacios (186-1994) chipped in 22 points and 6 assists. Four Cimarrones players scored in double figures. Tariq Christian responded with 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and Aaron Lewis scored 8 points and 9 rebounds. Cimarrones left bottom position moving up to ninth place, which they share with Sabios and Tigrillos.

Corsarios - Bucaros 77-86

There was a minor upset in Cartagena where 6th ranked Corsarios (2-3) were defeated by eighth ranked Bucaros (2-3) 86-77 on Monday. Bucaros forced 25 Corsarios turnovers. American guard JaQuaylon Mays (185-2000, college: Fort Lewis) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 8 steals for the winners and Venezuelan forward Osbel Caraballo (196-1998, college: STAC) chipped in 25 points. American-Puerto Rican forward Wilfredo Rodriguez (198-1994, college: Binghamton) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists and swingman Miguel Bermudez (195-1992) scored 16 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Four Corsarios players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Bucaros moved-up to seventh place, which they share with defeated Corsarios.

No shocking result in a game in Cucuta where sixth ranked Motilones (3-2) smashed bottom-ranked Condores (0-5) 91-53 on Tuesday. Motilones held Condores to an opponent 22.5 percent shooting from the field compared to 49.2 percent accuracy of the winners. American-Panamanian point guard CJ Rodriguez (188-1994, college: S.Nazarene) stepped up and scored 31 points and 8 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the winners and Panamanian forward Pablo Rivas (198-1994, college: NCCU) chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. Rivas is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Motilones players scored in double figures. American-Puerto Rican forward Jordan Glover (198-1996, college: TCNJ) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds and the former international center Freddy Asprilla (206-1988, college: Canisius) scored 6 points and 10 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Motilones moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Piratas. Condores lost their fifth game in a row. They still close the standings with five games lost.

Very expected game when 9th ranked Sabios (1-4) were rolled over on the road by fourth ranked Team Cali (4-1) 101-68 on Tuesday. Team Cali dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Sabios' 22 and made 20-of-20 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. American Tirrell Brown (198-1993, college: OBU) stepped up and scored 19 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners and American-Puerto Rican guard Brian Vazquez (190-1994) chipped in 23 points. Five Team Cali players scored in double figures. American guard Kylon Higgins (190-1993, college: Arkansas Tech) responded with 29 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) and guard Jerson Martinez (185-1992) scored 19 points and 9 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Team Cali moved-up to second place, which they share with Cafeteros and Carrib.Storm. Sabios lost their third game in a row. They keep the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with Cimarrones and Tigrillos.
