Liga Mayor Round 5 (Regular Season): Ahuachapan hands first defeat to San Salvador

San Salvador (4-1) recorded its first loss on the court of fourth ranked Ahuachapan on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by Ahuachapan 80-74. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of San Salvador. Ahuachapan made 27-of-35 free shots (77.1 percent) during the game, while San Salvador only scored two points from the stripe. The best player for the winners was Dominican Yenifer Jimenez (163-1999) who had a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds. Monica Aristondo (163-1992) chipped in 28 points and 8 rebounds. Cuban Anisleidys Martinez (181-1989) produced a double-double by scoring 43 points (!!!) and 19 rebounds for the guests. Ahuachapan maintains fourth place with 2-3 record, which they share with Santa Ana. San Salvador at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. They share it with Salvadorenas. Ahuachapan is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Capitalinas (#6) in the next round. San Salvador will play against the league's second-placed Salvadorenas (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Ahuachapan. Second ranked Salvadorenas (4-1) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging 4th placed Ahuachapan (2-3) 69-66 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Ahuachapan. Center Silvia Vega (176-2003) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 14 rebounds. Gabriela Alfaro contributed with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Salvadorenas' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Dominican Yenifer Jimenez (163-1999) answered with 36 points (!!!) and 5 steals for Ahuachapan. Salvadorenas have a solid series of three victories in a row. They used an opportunity after San Salvador lost their game and moved up joining them at the top position. Ahuachapan at the other side keeps the fourth place with three games lost. They share the position with Santa Ana. Salvadorenas will play against Santa Ana (#4) in the next round. Ahuachapan will play against Capitalinas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Capitalinas (0-6) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 64-43 loss to fifth ranked Santa Ana (2-3) in on Saturday evening. Dairis Tornell stepped up and scored 27 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Valeria Ayala responded with 8 points and 7 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Santa Ana moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Ahuachapan. Loser Capitalinas still closes the standings with six games lost. Santa Ana will meet at home league's second-placed Salvadorenas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Capitalinas will play against Ahuachapan (#5) and hope to get finally their first victory.

In the last game of round 5 winless Capitalinas were crushed by Santa Tecla in a road game 57-38.

Santa Ana - Capitalinas 64-43

Bottom-ranked Capitalinas (0-6) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 64-43 loss to fifth ranked Santa Ana (2-3) in on Saturday evening. They dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Capitalinas' 28. Santa Ana forced 32 Capitalinas turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Cuban point guard Dairis Tornell (176-1992) stepped up and scored 27 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for the winners and guard Vanessa Hernandez (157-1997) chipped in 19 points, 6 assists and 7 steals. Guard Valeria Ayala (164-2008) responded with 8 points and 7 rebounds and point guard Alejandra Martinez (169-2005) scored 6 points and 11 rebounds. There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Capitalinas (0-6) were crushed on the road by third ranked Santa Tecla (4-2) 57-38 on Tuesday. Santa Tecla held Capitalinas to an opponent 24.1 percent shooting from the field compared to 31.2 percent accuracy of the winners. Santa Tecla forced 29 Capitalinas turnovers. Forward Camila Lima (172-2003) stepped up and scored 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Cuban guard Elianis Armenteros (175-2000, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 20 points and 6 rebounds. Guard Fatima Salamanca (158-2009) responded with 11 points and 5 rebounds and forward Elba Sorto (175-2008) scored 6 points and 8 rebounds.
