Canada celebrate title in Edmonton

Canada - Cuba 82-66
Canada claimed the FIBA Americas Championship crown. They outgunned Cuba in Edmonton for the first Gold since 1995. Kia Nurse (183-G-96) scored 20 points to pace the hosts. She was named the MVP after the game. Cuba jumped to a 22:19 lead after the opening quarter. But Canada responded with a 25:13 run in the second term to take a 9-point halftime lead. Canada erupted for 38 points in the second half and marched to the victory. Natalie Achonwa (190-F-92, college: Notre Dame, agency: SIG) delivered 12 points in the win. Leidis Oquendo (180-F-82) responded with 25 points for Cuba. Clenia Noblet (190-C-87) had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
3-4 Place
Brazil - Argentina 59-66
Argentina earned the Bronze medals in Edmonton. They held off Brazil in the consolation final. Celia Fiorotto (184-C-92) provided 13 points to pace the winners. Argentina built an 18:13 lead after the opening quarter. They stretched the lead at 6-point mark at the interval 30:24. Argentina stayed in charge throughout the third term. They entered the fourth period up by 8 points 49:41. Brazil narrowed the gap in the final stanza but could not threaten Argentina on their way to the win. Macarena Rosset, Ornella Santana and Sthefany Thomas (175-F/G-89, college: Clemson, agency: FirstPick Basketball Mngm) posted 8 points each for the winners. Gilmara Justino (191-C-81) responded with 19 points for Brazil. Iziane Castro Marques (182-G/F-82, agency: Josep and Nicolas) had 11 points in the loss.
