Group ACuba - Puerto Rico 55-80Puerto Rico victoriously opened their Fiba AmeriCup campaign. They stormed past Cuba in San Juan. The hosts grabbed a 21:10 lead after ten minutes. They followed with a 25:10 run in the third quarter to clear off for good. Allison Gibson (180-G/F-93, college: Oregon St.) produced 14 points, while Tayra Melendez (183-G-93, college: URI) added 12 points in the win. Yamara Amargo (179-PF-85, agency: Pro Sports) replied with 20 points for Cuba. Mexico - Canada 53-109 Canada eased past Mexico in the opener in San Juan. Canada dominated from start to finish. They established a 51:20 halftime lead. Canada unleashed 58 points in the second half and cruised to the victory. Jamie Weisner-Scott (178-SF-94, college: Oregon St., agency: LBM Management) produced 21 points, while Kayla Alexander (193-C-91, college: Syracuse, agency: LBM Management) added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Canada. Jacqueline Luna-Castro (188-F-93, college: Charleston) netted 12 points for Mexico. Group BBrazil - Colombia 67-61Brazil defeated Colombia to record the first win in San Juan. The teams went neck and neck throughout the first half. Brazil and Colombia were tied at 28 heading into the second half. Colombia pulled ahead for a 49:47 lead at the final break. But Brazil used a strong 20:12 run in the fourth term to snatch a tough victory. Clarissa dos Santos accounted for 14 points, while Damiris Dantas (191-C-78) and Patricia Teixeira (175-G/F-90) netted 12 points each for Brazil. Jenifer Munoz (170-G-91) delivered 19 points, while Mabel Martinez (180-F-86) added 11 points in the loss. Paraguay - USA 31-110 USA crushed Paraguay to open win count at the tournament. USA piled up a 56:18 halftime lead. They added 54 points in the second half to breeze to the victory. Diamond Deshields (185-G-95, college: Tennessee) stepped up with 20 points and 8 assists, while Arika Ogunbowale finished with 17 points for USA.
