Liga Metropolitana Round 10: Halcones lose to Villa Nueva

Round 10 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Halcones (6-2). They were defeated by second ranked Villa Nueva (6-2) 80-69 on Friday night. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Halcones. It was a key game for the top position in the league. They outrebounded Halcones 50-34 including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Guard Ruben Jerez (-94) scored 31 points, 6 assists and 4 steals to lead the charge for the winners and center Bernie Diaz (200-81) chipped in 21 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side point guard Anthony Guerra (178-97) responded with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Villa Nueva have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with defeated Halcones. Halcones will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Villa Nueva will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Coeindeguasa on the road.
Very significant was Olmeca's (#2, 5-3) victory against one of their biggest challengers Club Force (5-3) 70-63. Guard Luis Menendez (179-95) notched 23 points to lead the effort and Edwin Ruiz supported him with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Even a double-double of 22 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocks by center Helmut Esquivel (196-0) did not help to save the game for Club Force. Despite that victory Olmeca went down to third position due to points difference, which they share with defeated Club Force. Club Force lost third consecutive game. Olmeca will play against bottom-ranked Monjitas (#7) in the next round. Club Force will play against Forza (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Monjitas (0-9) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their ninth consecutive match to sixth ranked Coeindeguasa (3-6) 71-42 on Friday evening. David Salguero fired 9 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Coeindeguasa's coach felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Carlos Gonzalez produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds for lost side. Coeindeguasa maintains sixth position with 3-6 record. Monjitas at the other side still closes the standings with nine games lost. Coeindeguasa will meet at home league's leader Villa Nueva in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
