Arnett Gardens Rockers clinch SBC title - Jun 18, 2014

ARNETT Gardens Rockers rallied from two games down to clinch the 2014 Southern Basketball Conference (SBC) best-of-five finals 3-2 over Waterhouse Blazers at the latter's court last Wednesday night. It was a very remarkable fightback by the Rockers who trailed 2-0 going into Game Three and who needed to win to keep themselves in contention. The Rockers won Game Three 79-64 at Waterhouse and then played Game Four at their Tony Spaulding Sports Complex home court, winning 75-66 to lock the series at 2-2. The deadlock forced a decisive Game Five. Winning coach Granville Wilson said it was a very good comeback by the players after knowing "we were down 0-2 going into Game Three". "I am very proud for the players who made victory and the title possible, as they did extremely well by winning the last three games for us to be crowned Southern Conference Division One League champions," Wilson said. Meanwhile, losing coach Michael Kirklew said the players did not follow instructions as they were playing their own game. "The Blazers defence was not clicking; neither the offence. The players did not play anything in the fourth quarter and our opponents totally dominated and we were outplayed in the end," Kirklew said. He said the Rockers played well in the last three games as they wanted it more than the Blazers. "Their defence played hard and their offensive players were better than us and kept on going after winning Game Three." In Game Five action, the Blazers led the Rockers 15-10 at the completion of the first quarter. The Rockers rallied nicely in the second quarter winning 19-15 points, but were still trailing 29-30 overall. It was a tough third quarter with the Blazers coming strongly to lead 21-19. At the third-quarter break, the Blazers were up 15-48. However, a dramatic twist came in the fourth and final quarter when the Blazers were outscored 24-7.
