The Unit/Uberlandia beat the
Universo/Ajax tonight, 71 to 66, on the fourth game of the Liga
Sudamerica's finals, and achieved their first league title.
Uberlandia, who got runner-up in the last edition of the league, losing
to Argentina's Atenas, enters now to the history of Brazilian basketball
as the second team to win it all. The team from Rio de Janeiro, Vasco da
Gama, won the competition twice, in 1999 and 2000.
The forward,
Rogerio Klafke (200-F-71, agency:
Interperformances), the point guard,
'Helinho' Garcia (186-G-75), and Uberlandia's head coach,
Helio Rubens participated on the 2000 Vasco's league title, and now
have two South American championships in their careers. Former Brazil's
National Team coach Helio Rubens also have three Liga Sudamericana
runner-ups, 1998 with Franca, 2002 with Vasco, and last year with
Uberlandia.
