The Astros de Jalisco capped a historic campaign by winning the 2026 CIBACOPA title, beating the Frayles de Guasave 76-61 in Game 5 of the Final to seal the championship on the road. The crown is the Astros' fourth in the last five years, a run that pulls them level with Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregon each with four league titles as the most successful franchises in the competition's history. American guard Trey Burke (183-PG-1992, college: Michigan) was named Finals MVP, his experience guiding the Jalisco side to the title. The Astros set the tone from the opening tip, imposing a physical style while the Frayles struggled to score through the first two quarters. It was not the visitors' sharpest first half of the postseason, but they still carried a comfortable 37-27 lead into the break. From there they never let Guasave mount a comeback, controlling the second half in front of a supportive home crowd to close out the game and the series. Jaron Martin (178-PG-1995, college: UC Irvine) led the Astros' attack with 17 points, with Christopher Matthew Perry (190-PG) adding 13. For the Frayles, Sa'eed Nelson (188-PG-1998, college: American) top-scored with 16 and Octavio Brito chipped in 14, but it was not enough to extend the series. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon survived a heart-stopping fourth-quarter comeback to beat Angeles de la Ciudad de Mexico 104-94 in the CIBACUP final on Saturday, claiming the CIBACOPA in-season tournament championship and their second trophy of 2026. Tony Farmer (201-F-1994, college: Lee JC) and Justin Moss (203-F/C-1993, college: Buffalo) were unstoppable, each scoring 26 points. Farmer added nine rebounds, four assists, and two blocks, while Moss registered a double-double with 13 rebounds. Josh Perkins (191-G-1995, college: Gonzaga, agency: Slash Sports) contributed 19 points and Jahvari Josiah completed the dominant frontcourt effort with 13 points and 10 rebounds a second double-double for the Halcones. Angeles won the first quarter and kept the contest tight, but Obregon adjusted and took a 45-41 halftime lead. The third quarter was decisive or so it seemed. The Halcones stretched their advantage to 13 points and led 73-60 heading into the fourth. Then Angeles made their move. Terrell Brown (185-G-1998, college: NM State) drilled a three-pointer with 5:16 remaining that cut the deficit to just 81-83, sending the La Paz crowd into a frenzy. But Obregon's championship composure surfaced when it mattered most the Halcones tightened defensively and responded with a decisive scoring burst to pull away for the 104-94 final. Trahson Burrell (201-F/G-1992, college: Memphis) led Angeles with 29 points and Chuba Ohams (206-F-1997, college: Fordham, agency: Octagon Europe) added 22, but the Mexico City side could not sustain their fourth-quarter surge long enough to complete the comeback. The CIBACUP triumph gives Obregon their second trophy of 2026 after winning the Copa Salsa Huichol during the preseason, establishing the Halcones as the team to beat as the CIBACOPA regular season resumes on April 21. |
