Indigenas - Rivas 97-91 There was no surprise in Matagalpa where 10th ranked Rivas (3-19) were defeated by eighth ranked Indigenas (6-18) 97-91 on Thursday. Strangely Rivas outrebounded Indigenas 43-31 including a 16-4 advantage in defensive rebounds. American guard Chris Moten (190-1989, college: LA Pierce JC) scored 31 points and 6 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Dominican power forward Teodoro Romero (202-1990) chipped in 24 points and 11 rebounds during the contest. Four Indigenas players scored in double figures. Indigenas' coach used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Cuban Yosniel Morales (196-1987) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 22 rebounds and 5 assists and guard Marvin Omier (205-1984) scored 25 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Indigenas maintains eighth position with 6-18 record. Loser Rivas stay dead last with 19 lost games. Seventh ranked Leon (9-13) played at the court of 8th ranked Occidentales (5-18). Leon smashed Occidentales 102-69 on Thursday. Leon dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Occidentales' 48. Leon forced 22 Occidentales turnovers and outrebounded them 40-27 including 26 on the offensive glass. Puerto Rican guard Antonio Ralat (188, college: UAB) had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and Harold Barberena (179-1982) chipped in 13 points during the contest. Guard Deikel Sanchez responded with 13 points and 8 rebounds and Puerto Rican-American guard Robert Nieves (188-1999, college: Graceland) scored 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Leon and four Occidentales players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Leon maintains seventh position with 9-13 record. This time they beat 5th ranked UNI Basket (12-11) 85-81. Real Esteli players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Puerto Rican guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991, agency: Interperformances) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points and 6 assists. The former international swingman Francisco Garth (195-1999) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Real Esteli's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Puerto Rican power forward Owens Perez (206-1992) replied with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 18 rebounds and 4 assists and American-Puerto Rican guard Brian Vazquez (190-1994) added 21 points and 11 rebounds in the effort for UNI Basket. Four UNI Basket players scored in double figures. Real Esteli (23-1) have an impressive 11-game winning streak. They maintain first position. UNI Basket lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with Leones MGA. Leones MGA was smashed at home by 29 points 59-88 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Caribbean Coast looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was Puerto Rican guard Luis Lopez (182-1998, college: PR-Mayaguez) who scored 29 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists. Jorge Gonzalez chipped in 26 points and 7 rebounds. Caribbean Coast's coach felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Puerto Rican guard Jeffrey Burgos (198-1994, college: Seton Hill) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds and Puerto Rican point guard Luis Gonzalez (183-1997, college: PR-Bayamon) added 15 points and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Caribbean Coast have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place. Leones MGA at the other side dropped to the fifth position with 11 games lost. They share it with UNI Basket.
