LPB Round 7: Derby game ends with Halcones' defeat of Aguilas- January 23, 2020

Universitarios - Toros 84-76 Bottom-ranked Toros is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their seventh consecutive match to third ranked Halcones (4-3) 84-76 on Wednesday evening. Halcones made 30-of-38 free shots (78.9 percent) during the game, while Toros only scored nine points from the stripe. It was an exceptional evening for British forward Temidire George (193-98) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 15 rebounds. American-Puerto Rican Wil Martinez (188-92, college: Fairmont St.) accounted for 24 points and 5 rebounds (made all of his ten free throws !!!) for the winning side. Four Halcones players scored in double figures. Gil Atencio (202-96, college: St.Clair) came up with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds and Venezuelan Graddy Osorio (193-87) added 9 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for Toros in the defeat. Defending champion maintains third place with 4-3 record having just two points less than leader Caballos. Loser Toros still closes the standings with seven games lost. Aguilas were defeated at home 93-97 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. Halcones shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 72.7 percentage. 24 personal fouls committed by Aguilas helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American-Puerto Rican Wil Martinez (188-92, college: Fairmont St.) who helped to win the game recording 54 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds (perfect behind the arc making all ten shots !!!). Guard Jahir Cabeza (196, college: SSU) contributed with 17 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Halcones' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Anthony Brown (196-89, college: Imperial Valley JC) answered with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Jonathan King (193-90, college: Abil.Christian) added 12 points, 8 rebounds and 13 assists in the effort for Aguilas. Five Aguilas players scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains third place with 4-3 record having just two points less than leader Caballos. Aguilas at the other side dropped to the fifth position with four games lost. First ranked Caballos managed to get a 13-point victory 98-85. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Panteras. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Caballos brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. It was a great evening for American-Puerto Rican forward Angel Matias (193-92, college: Georgia South) who led his team to a victory scoring 23 points and 7 rebounds. Dominican center Miguel Evangelista (210-91) helped adding 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Five Caballos players scored in double figures. At the losing side American point guard Tjader Fernandez (178-94) responded with 22 points and 8 assists and swingman Alejandro Grant (199-93) scored 23 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Caballos have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 6-1 record. Panteras at the other side keep the second position with two games lost. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their seventh consecutive match to second ranked Panteras (6-2) 78-71. Panteras dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Toros' 28 and made 16-of-21 charity shots (76.2 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Toros 53-30 including a 19-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. Luis Dinolis (185-93, college: Broward CC) fired a double-double by scoring 27 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Dominican power forward Brayan Martinez (203-91) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points and 23 rebounds. Panteras' coach Adriano Macias allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Point guard Joel Munoz (183-80) produced 22 points and 9 assists and Venezuelan Graddy Osorio (193-87) added 20 points and 7 rebounds respectively for lost side.
