LPB U21 Round 7: Univ.West defeat Toros in the closest game of the week- August 8, 2021

Caballos - Correcaminos 94-91 Important game to mention about took place in Aguadulce. Third ranked Caballos (5-3) saved a 3-point victory at home edging their biggest opponent Correcaminos (5-2) 94-91 on Thursday evening. It was an exceptional evening for Jose Montenegro (191-98) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 26 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Point guard Alberto Duque (165-0) accounted for 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. Forward Jorhiel Zapata (196-2) came up with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds and point guard Jonathan Andrade (178-0) added 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists respectively for Correcaminos in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Caballos maintains third place with 5-3 record behind leader Univ.West. Correcaminos at the other side keep the second position with two games lost. Caballos will play against bottom-ranked Toros (#7) in David in the next round. Correcaminos will play on the road against Atletico (#4) in Panama City and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Dragones (3-4) won against visiting Atletico (3-4) 85-78. Dragones forced 22 Atletico turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Center Jesus Lombardo (201-0) fired a double-double by scoring 24 points and 19 rebounds for the winners. Justin Quintero (193-98) chipped in 13 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Four Dragones players scored in double figures. Oscar Zephyrine (190-0) produced a double-double by scoring 27 points and 13 rebounds and forward Bryan Anderson (185-1) added 17 points and 11 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Dragones moved-up to fourth place, which they share with defeated Atletico. Atletico lost their third game in a row. Dragones will meet at home bottom-ranked Toros (#7) in the next round. Atletico will play against the league's second-placed Correcaminos and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Correcaminos outrebounded Panteras 42-28 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Panteras' players. Roberto Armstrong (182-0) fired 19 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. Forward Jhomar Garibaldi (188-2) chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds. Point guard Angel Herrera (175-3, college: N.Essex CC) produced 13 points and forward Justin Diaz (187-2) added 13 points respectively for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Correcaminos maintains second place with 5-2 record behind leader Univ.West. Panteras lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the sixth position with five games lost. Correcaminos will meet Atletico (#4) in the next round. Panteras will play against the league's leader Univ.West and hope to secure a win. They outrebounded Atletico 46-35 including 17 on the offensive glass. Jose Montenegro (191-98) fired a double-double by scoring 19 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Amilcar Sanchez chipped in 19 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Bryan Anderson (185-1) produced a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!), 12 rebounds and 4 blocks and point guard Alex Vergara (171) added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for lost side. Four Atletico players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Caballos maintains third place with 5-3 record behind leader Univ.West. The visitors managed to secure only three-point victory 80-77. However their fans expected much easier game. It was a great evening for point guard Gonzalo Ortiz Jr (182-2) who led his team to a victory scoring 28 points. Rene Bracho Jr. helped adding 12 points and 18 rebounds. Univ.West's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side point guard Guillermo Navarro (170-3) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists and guard Damar Wilson scored 19 points and 7 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Univ.West have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 6-1 record. Toros at the other side stay at the bottom position with six games lost. Univ.West are looking forward to face Panteras (#6) in Panama City in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Toros will play on the road against Dragones in Panama City and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
