Atletico Nacional - Caballos 99-92 LPB top team - Atletico (5-0) added another victory to their record on Sunday. This time they beat sixth ranked Caballos (1-4) in Panama City 99-92. Atletico dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Caballos' 36. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was American-Salvadorean point guard Roberto Martinez (185-91, college: OLLU) who scored 38 points (!!!) and 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Power forward Daniel King (203-87, college: Texas Southern) chipped in a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds. Martinez is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international Josimar Ayarza (205-87, college: Southern Miss) who recorded 24 points and 5 assists and Jose Montenegro (191-98) added 24 points and 4 assists respectively. Five Atletico and four Caballos players scored in double figures. Atletico have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 5-0 record, which they share with Correcaminos. Defending champion Caballos keep the sixth place with four games lost. Atletico will meet at home league's second-placed Correcaminos in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Caballos will play against Dragones (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Correcaminos looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was center Jaime Lloreda (204-80, college: LSU) who had a double-double by scoring 32 points and 14 rebounds. International forward Michael Hicks (196-76, college: TAMUCC) chipped in a double-double by scoring 12 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists. Four Correcaminos players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Damar Wilson (202-0) who recorded 25 points and Venezuelan point guard Jose Luis Osio (165) added 21 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Correcaminos have an impressive five-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Atletico Nacional. Loser Toros still closes the standings with six games lost. Correcaminos will meet league's leader Atletico in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Toros will have a break next round. Halcones outrebounded Dragones 50-33 including a 23-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. American forward Troy Jones (201-92, college: TAMUK) had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American guard Logan Santiago (185, college: AIC) chipped in 16 points during the contest. Four Halcones players scored in double figures. Halcones' coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was forward Pablo Rivas (198-94, college: NCCU) with 20 points and 6 rebounds and Gil Atencio (202-96, college: St.Clair) scored 14 points and 6 rebounds. Halcones moved-up to third place. Newly promoted Dragones dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. Halcones will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Dragones will play on the road against Caballos (#6) in Aguadulce and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Fifth ranked Panteras (3-3) saved a 3-point derby victory at home edging bottom-ranked Toros (0-6) 70-67 on Monday evening. Luis Dinolis (185-93, college: Broward CC) notched 16 points and 9 rebounds to lead the effort and Alejandro Grant (199-93) supported him with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Panteras' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even a double-double of 16 points and 21 rebounds by Colombian center John Hernandez (207-84) did not help to save the game for Toros. Venezuelan point guard Jose Luis Osio (165) added 12 points and 5 assists. Four Panteras and five Toros players scored in double figures. Panteras moved-up to fourth place. Toros at the other side still closes the standings with six games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
