LPB Round 13: Halcones beat Dragones in a derby game- October 13, 2021

Universitarios - Dragones 92-84 The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Panama City: Halcones (#1) and Dragones (#5). Halcones (9-2) won against visiting Dragones (7-5) 92-84. They outrebounded Dragones 48-31 including 16 on the offensive glass. The former international Anell Alexis (200-90, college: Marist) fired 36 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds (made all of his nine free throws !!!) for the winners. Naturalized Chilean guard Eugenio Luzcando (187-95, college: Idaho St.) chipped in 26 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. American forward Zacarry Douglas (203-95, college: NCCU) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds and forward Pablo Rivas (198-94, college: NCCU) added 19 points respectively for lost side. Halcones have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with 9-2 record, which they share with Correcaminos. Newly promoted Dragones dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Halcones will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Dragones' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Panama City Panteras. They dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Toros' 24. Panteras forced 21 Toros turnovers. Dominican forward Cristian Joan Duran (201-96, college: Tenn Tech) stepped up and scored 17 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and Luis Dinolis (185-93, college: Broward CC) chipped in 18 points. Panteras' coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side Colombian center John Hernandez (207-84) responded with 9 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists and Oscar Zephyrine (190-0) scored 9 points and 6 rebounds. Panteras maintains fifth place with 6-4 record. Toros lost their twelfth game in a row. They still close the standings with 12 games lost. Second ranked Correcaminos faced 3rd placed Atletico. Host Correcaminos (9-2) smashed guests from Panama City (7-4) 94-58. Correcaminos dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Atletico's 28. Correcaminos forced 20 Atletico turnovers and outrebounded them 54-27 including a 22-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Atletico's players. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international Yosimar Stewart (197-86) who helped to win the game recording 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. International forward Michael Hicks (196-76, college: TAMUCC) contributed with 15 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Four Correcaminos players scored in double figures. Jonathan King (193-90, college: ACU) answered with 8 points and forward Armando Andrade (196-0) added 5 points in the effort for Atletico. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Correcaminos keep a position of league leader, which they share with Universitarios. Atletico at the other side keeps the third place with four games lost. Correcaminos will play against Caballos (#6) in Aguadulce in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Atletico will have a break next round. Dragones dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Caballos' 30. They outrebounded Caballos 54-38 including 39 on the defensive glass. Dragones looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Forward Pablo Rivas (198-94, college: NCCU) stepped up and scored 25 points for the winners and Gil Atencio (202-96, college: St.Clair) chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds. Rivas is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Dragones players scored in double figures. At the losing side British center Dylan Johns (211-93, college: CSUN) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and naturalized American point guard CJ Rodriguez (188-94, college: S.Nazarene) scored 9 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Dragones moved-up to fourth place. Caballos lost their third game in a row. Defending champion keep the sixth position with ten games lost.
