LPB Round 5: Derby game ends with LA U's defeat of Aguilas

LPB is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 5 rounds left. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Panama City: LA U (#4) and Aguilas (#3). LA U (3-3) crushed visiting Aguilas (2-3) by 17 points 69-52. LA U forced 27 Aguilas turnovers. Swingman Diobelis Batista (167-5) orchestrated the victory by scoring 19 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals. Guard Mariangel Concha (-4) contributed with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Center Angelica Racine answered with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists for Aguilas. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. LA U moved-up to third place. Aguilas at the other side dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. LA U's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Panama City Panteras.
An interesting game for Correcaminos (5-0) which played road game in Panama City against second-ranked Panteras (4-2). Leader Correcaminos managed to get a 7-point victory 66-59. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Panteras. Colombian forward Mabel Martinez (180-86) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 20 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and Tathiana Mosquera chipped in 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Power forward Maria de Gracia responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Undefeated Correcaminos have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 5-0 record. Panteras at the other side keep the second position with two games lost. Correcaminos will play against bottom-ranked Atletico (#6) in Panama City in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Panteras' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Panama City to the arena LA U.

In the last game of round 5 bottom-ranked Atletico was beaten by Amazonas on the road 84-70.
The most impressive performance of 5th round was 16 points and 26 rebounds by Gloria Martinez of Amazonas.

Panteras - Correcaminos 59-66

An interesting game for Correcaminos (5-0) which played road game in Panama City against second-ranked Panteras (4-2). Leader Correcaminos managed to get a 7-point victory 66-59. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Panteras. Colombian forward Mabel Martinez (180-86) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 20 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and Colombian power forward Tathiana Mosquera (197-89) chipped in 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Power forward Maria de Gracia responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds and naturalized American guard Ashley Reid (165-98, college: Wichita St.) scored 19 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Amazonas - Atletico 84-70

Everything could happen in Cocle at the game between two tied teams. Both fifth ranked Amazonas and 6th ranked Atletico had identical 1-4 record. This time Amazonas used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Panama City 84-70. Amazonas outrebounded Atletico 76-41 including a 32-10 advantage in offensive rebounds. Atletico was plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. Colombian forward Laura Garrido (-90) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 40 points (!!!), 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winners and guard Gloria Martinez chipped in 16 points and 26 rebounds. Venezuelan point guard Nathaly Malpica (161) responded with 21 points and 9 rebounds and Soleimar Martinez produced a double-double by scoring 11 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Atletico's coach rotated eleven players saving starting five for next games. Amazonas maintains fifth place with 2-4 record. Atletico lost their fourth game in a row. They stay at the bottom position with five games lost. Amazonas will play against higher ranked Aguilas (#4) in Panama City in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Atletico will play at home against the league's leader Correcaminos to get more than just one victory in their record.
