LPB Round 2: Lobos lose to Atletico

There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in LPB. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Lobos at the home court on Friday night. Hosts were rolled over by Atletico 97-76. Atletico forced 21 Lobos turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Jonathan King (193-1990, college: ACU) scored 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Joel Munoz (183-1980) chipped in 15 points and 6 steals during the contest. Costa Rican swingman Daniel Shedden (191-1996, college: MSUB) responded with 28 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Atletico are looking forward to face Centinelas in the next round where they are favorite. Lobos will play against Caballos in Aguadulce and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very significant was Lobos' 77-71 road victory against Halcones. Costa Rican swingman Daniel Shedden (191-1996, college: MSUB) notched a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals to lead the effort and Jesus Lombardo supported him with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Even 17 points and 9 rebounds by Grant Alejandro (199-1993) did not help to save the game for Halcones. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Lobos will play against Caballos in Aguadulce in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Halcones' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Panama City to the arena Halcones.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Panama City: Atletico and Halcones. Atletico smashed visiting Halcones by 45 points 104-59. The best player for the winners was Aaron Gedeon who scored 20 points and 8 rebounds. Brandon Franklin produced 18 points for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Atletico will meet at home Centinelas in the next round where they are favorite. Halcones will play against Caballos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 2: Centinelas lost to Universitarios on the opponent's court 57-75. Caballos managed to outperform Halcones in a home game 79-74. Caballos managed to beat Centinelas on the road 66-57.

Universitarios - Centinelas 75-57

Halcones used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from 75-57 on Wednesday night. Halcones shot 28 for 43 from the free-throw line, while Centinelas only scored ten points from the stripe. Halcones forced 24 Centinelas turnovers. The best player for the winners was Arturo Molina (182-2003) who scored 15 points and 8 rebounds. Maikol Rodrguez chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds. Five Halcones players scored in double figures. American Antonio Austin (196-1991, college: SDCC) produced 20 points and 6 rebounds and forward Fernando Gonzalez (182-2004) added 6 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Halcones will meet at home Caballos in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Centinelas will play against Atletico in Panama City and hope to win that game.

Caballos - Halcones 79-74

Caballos used a home court advantage and defeated the opponent from Panama City 79-74 on Wednesday night. The best player for the winners was forward Michael Hicks (196-1976, college: TAMUCC) who scored 29 points and 8 rebounds. Gil Atencio (202-1996, college: St.Clair) chipped in 23 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Grant Alejandro (199-1993) produced a double-double by scoring 27 points and 12 rebounds and guard Bryan Waithe (188-1994, college: Lindenwood) added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Caballos will again meet Halcones in the next round. Not a big story in a game when Centinelas were defeated at home by Caballos 66-57 on Friday. Caballos forced 21 Centinelas turnovers. Forward Michael Hicks (196-1976, college: TAMUCC) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds.
