LPBF Round 5: Cobras defeat Leonas

Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Leonas (7-2) at the home court on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by fourth ranked Cobras (5-5) 91-84. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Leonas. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. Colombian Laura Garrido (172-1997) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Colombian forward Paola Rivas (178) contributed with 9 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. Cobras' coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Venezuelan Amanda Torres (170-1989) answered with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds for Leonas. Cobras moved-up to second place, which they share with LA U. Leonas at the other side, also newcomer in the league, still keep top position with two games lost. Cobras is looking forward to face LA U (#3) in Panama City in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Leonas will play at home against Amazonas and are hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Panama City. Second ranked LA U (5-5) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 3rd placed Amazonas (4-5) 62-59 on Tuesday evening. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Venezuelan guard Crismar Rojas stepped up and scored 30 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and Veronica Guedez chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds. Colombian center Libia De la Rosa (185-1992) responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 17 rebounds. LA U have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 5-5 record having just one point less than leader Leonas, which they share with Cobras. Amazonas at the other side dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. LA U will play against league's second-placed Cobras in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Amazonas will play against the league's leader Leonas and hope to get back on the winning track.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Amazonas (4-5) against fifth ranked Felinas (3-7) on Sunday night. Host Amazonas were defeated by Felinas in a tough game in Cocle 63-68. Tayina Ellis nailed a double-double by scoring 10 points and 15 rebounds for the winning side. Libia De la Rosa came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds for Amazonas in the defeat. Newly promoted Felinas maintains fifth place with 3-7 record. Loser Amazonas dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Felinas will meet at home higher ranked LA U (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Amazonas will play against the league's leader Leonas and hope to secure a win.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 5: bottom-ranked Felinas were smashed by Cobras on the road 75-43. LA U lost to Leonas on its own court 73-78. Bottom-ranked Felinas unfortunately lost to Amazonas in Cocle 51-62.
The most impressive performance of 5th round was 18 points and 15 rebounds by Gloria Martinez of Amazonas.

Cobras - Felinas 75-43

Felinas will play against LA U and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Venezuelan point guard Nathaly Malpica (161) nailed a double-double by scoring 27 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists for the winning side and Venezuelan Amanda Torres (170-1989) accounted for 16 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Four Leonas players scored in double figures. Venezuelan guard Crismar Rojas came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and Mariangel Concha (173-2004) added 10 points and 17 rebounds respectively for LA U in the defeat. LA U's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Leonas have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. Newly promoted Leonas maintains first place with 7-2 record. Loser LA U keeps the second position with five games lost. They share it with Cobras. Leonas will meet at home Amazonas (#4) in the next round. Tayina Ellis (182-1984) came up with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 13 rebounds and Ivanis Gonzalez added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Felinas in the defeat. Felinas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Despite that victory Amazonas went down to fourth position due to points difference.
